New Royal Caribbean Royal ONE Plus Credit Card

Bank of America Royal Caribbean Credit Card Review (70,000 Points) | Apply or Skip?

Justin Vacula and returning co-host Darren discuss the new Bank of America Royal Caribbean Royal ONE Plus Visa Signature credit card, asking the key question: is this card worth applying for?

In this episode of the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast, they review the card’s 70,000-point welcome bonus after $3,000 in spending within 90 days, worth about $700 in Royal Caribbean rewards that can be used for onboard credit, cruise fare discounts, drink packages, excursions, and more.

Justin and Darren discuss the card’s main features, including 4x points on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea purchases, the $99 annual fee, TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit, priority boarding, and the $200 annual cruise discount after $20,000 in spend.

The conversation also compares this new Royal Caribbean card with other Bank of America credit cards, including Alaska, Premium Rewards, and cash-back business cards, as well as broader travel card competitors such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Capital One Venture X.

Travel at low cost with points and miles. Credit card rewards bring the smiles. Many adventures, tales to be told. Make and save money, the world will unfold.

Fight the war on happiness, pick up the gold. Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast breaks the mold.

You’re listening to the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast. I’m your host, Justin Vacula, here to help you make money, save money, and travel the world at low cost with credit card points, miles, benefits, and loyalty programs. Returning co-host, Darren, joins me to discuss the new Bank of America Royal Caribbean credit card with a 70,000 point welcome bonus.

Should cruise fans apply or skip this in favor of other Bank of America credit cards and [00:01:00] cards with other banks? On with today’s episode, recorded May 7th, 2026. Welcome back to the show, Darren, and Happy May. Thanks for having me, Justin. Always great to be back, and we know the answer to everything is more credit cards, so why not talk about this one?

We will see whether this one will be added to the list. At the end of the show, I think listeners will have a good grasp on this and whether it’s worth it. Absolutely. You and I, while we are both avid credit card collectors, may have a slightly different perspective on which credit cards are a good fit for each of us, so should be good discussion, and hope listeners enjoy it.

I think they did a good thing with this card. The previous cruise credit cards were quite underwhelming, and I think still are. But there’s a high welcome offer on this card, 70,000 points if you spend $3,000 in 90 days. This is usable for onboard credits, excursions, drink [00:02:00] packages, and more. You’re going to get these points, and you have to apply them to a booked cruise, or you could even book a cruise with the points.

You should be able to stack these with comp offers from MGM Rewards and other cruise bookings. Perhaps Royal Caribbean would give you an offer to return after you cruise, after you gamble on board. I looked at the fine print. It says, “Redemption start at 5,000 points. You can redeem your points for rewards such as onboard credits and cruise discounts by logging into your guest account through the available website or mobile app for the Royal Caribbean group cruise line corresponding to your cruise vacation.

You can also call corresponding contact centers.”

I like the idea that it’s flexible, Justin, right? Listeners to this podcast will not be surprised that we like the idea of stacking and flexible. Maybe book a comped cruise through [00:03:00] Casino Match, which I know you’ve done how many times now?

Lots and lots of times. Lots and lots of times. Oftentimes you wanna buy the internet package or the drink package or whatever it is, so being able to use some of these points to, like we talk about, upgrade your experience while you’re doing something that’s already free or at very low cost, I think really has a lot of benefits.

And then the flexibility of I, I’m not in that casino game yet, but hopefully if you’re listening to this podcast, you’ll be in it soon. I don’t have comp cruises yet so I’d like to maybe just take a cruise, and so now I have the opportunity to earn a big signup bonus, and Justin, I think anyone that plays this game loves a good signup bonus.

Yes, 70,000 points would be worth $700 in rewards, and if you’re already going to pay for the internet, you’re already going to pay for drink packages, whatever it is, this is almost as good as cashback, but not quite, because it’s limited to cruise [00:04:00] bookings. But if you were to say, “Hey, here’s a $700 cashback signup bonus,” I think a lot of listeners would like that, especially if they’re already very heavy on points or they’re running out of good credit cards to get.

Maybe they’re not eligible for certain cards again, or they’re looking for something different. We’ll continue with some of the benefits of this card. It says, “Earn 4X points on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Silversea purchases.” Not bad. We lost the 3X points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve for cruises, and the Altitude Reserve card, I downgraded that to the Altitude Connect.

The Altitude Reserve used to earn 4.5% unlimited, but after some devaluations to the card, I now have the Altitude Connect. The Altitude Connect gives 4% cashback on cruises. I think better than 4% in points that offset cruise purchases. We also have the Chase Ink [00:05:00] Preferred for 3X points.

We have the Amtrak Guest Rewards Preferred MasterCard 2X, and those Amtrak points are worth more than two cents per point in most cases. And the Amex Personal Green Card is 3X, which should apply to cruising. And of course, we can use credit in combination with onboard gambling. We can make room charges for video poker, blackjack, whatever the case might be on board, so that 4X category can get a lot of action on most cruises.

Yeah good options there, Justin, and I think most everyone has probably at least one of those cards. If you already have those cards and you’re planning on using those, does it make sense to get this card? Probably without the signup bonus, the answer would be no.

But with the signup bonus, Justin I think it has some opportunity. That $700 signup bonus, essentially. That’s pretty good value. Not bad. It does have some other bonus categories. 2X airlines, not so special.

2X hotels, not special. [00:06:00] 2X dining, not special. 2X grocery and gas that’s beaten by other cards, but if you’re a very high spender in the grocery and gas categories, perhaps with gift cards, prepaid cards, then that 2X can be your spend towards the signup bonus. And it also gives you a yearly $200 discount on a cruise booking if you spend $20,000 on the card.

I think that most would skip that, not going for the 20,000, and hopefully listeners aren’t paying outright for a cruise when they have comp offers from MGM Rewards and other sources.

Another thing that’s interesting about this card, Justin, is the annual $200 discount on a cruise booking. So I guess that would not be the incidentals you talked about earlier, right? That would be the actual booking.

Maybe not as important, like you said, for folks that already have status with casinos and so forth, but the other important thing to mention is that $200 discount is after [00:07:00] spending $20,000 in a year. So there’s some cost there. That’s only 1% on your spend, and if you’re only using it for places where you’re getting 2X at grocery or gas, there’s certainly plenty of other good cards that probably would be a better value there.

It could be interesting if you max out the 20K on, say, two, three cruises with online gambling. Now, I wouldn’t suggest going over 10K in spend on one trip, but maybe you go around 9,500 or so. I don’t like the 10K threshold because they usually start asking more questions, and it could lead to adverse action.

But two or three cruises a year maybe, and you can do maybe 9,500, and then do some 2X grocery or 2X gas to take you over. But $200 off on a cruise booking that probably would be over $1,000 for one person, not so [00:08:00] appealing. I would think that even people that aren’t high spenders, they’d be better off just using a card giving them better than 2X categories, going for other signup bonuses.

But heavy spenders might find this at least somewhat appealing. Yeah or someone that’s maybe just getting into this game, Justin. I think that’s the other side of this coin. Haven’t done any cruising, haven’t maybe done a lot of travel. To sign up for this card they have, 700 or over $700 worth of credits to book.

If they like it, like you said maybe they spend a little money on the card, on the cruise, doing a little gambling to rack up some more points at 4X and work their way towards that 20,000 so that they can do the same thing again, next time.

Did you mention whether there’s an annual fee, Justin? I know we have a lot of listeners, maybe not a lot, a few listeners that are always concerned about annual fees. What’s the story with this one? Yes, this one is a small annual fee, and it is charged in the first year, a $99 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.

It advertises [00:09:00] that 70k sign-up bonus worth about $700. Then you’re getting about $600 in value in year one from the sign-up bonus minus the annual fee. You’re also getting TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, but I imagine that most people listening already have those things, or at least one of those things.

You get priority boarding and luggage handling, but I don’t find that too valuable because usually when I go on the ship, I head to the dining room or the buffet area, and by the time I’m done eating, I’m taking my time, I go back to the room is already ready, and the luggage usually arrives within an hour or two.

You read my mind, Justin. I was just gonna ask you what your experience has been and whether priority boarding and luggage handling would be worth it, but doesn’t really sound like that’s the case. No. The annual fee, you could downgrade this card after the first year, so you wouldn’t pay the second year annual fee.

I don’t see this as much of a keeper card. You’re [00:10:00] paying $99 annual fee for not much. The big boost here is year one with that sign-up bonus. I imagine if they did something like a 60,000-point sign-up bonus and no annual fee, it would be more of a keeper card, of course, but that $99 annual fee, you’re not getting much back after year one.

You’re in that 4X category and the high spend goal that people probably shouldn’t go for. Do we know if there is a Royal One downgrade option? Is it Royal Two? Yes, you can make a business decision and downgrade to the no annual fee card. They did release two new cards, but the other one just not very good.

Even though it’s no annual fee, it’s a downgrade path, not a card that you should just sign up for outright because the welcome bonus is much smaller Yeah, it’s good to mention here if you are thinking about this card, make sure you’re applying for the Royal One card with the 99 annual fee and the 70,000 sign-up bonus.

We [00:11:00] don’t want you to accidentally apply for the wrong card. That would be disappointing. This is the one Royal card to rule them all. Justin, is that a Lord of the Rings joke? Are we allow- is that allowed? Yeah that’s fine. You’ll permit it?

That’s fine. Okay. Royal One Plus Visa Signature credit card. There’s also a TM and a registered trademark in there. You’ll be on the right page with that sign-up bonus is the thing to look for. And speaking of choices, this is a Bank of America credit card, and Bank of America has many credit cards.

I really like the Atmos Summit card, and as of recording, it has a heightened sign-up bonus of 100,000 Atmos points. I’d much rather 100,000 Atmos points than $700 in cruise credits, and many benefits on the Atmos cards that make them keeper cards. There’s a mid-tier card with an 80K sign-up bonus, I believe, and these cards come with a lot of benefits and certificates.

What do you think? I’d take the Summit, the Atmos Summit over the Royal One Plus. Every [00:12:00] day and twice on Sundays, Justin, no question asked. Even with the higher annual fee those Atmos points, what folks probably already know was the old Alaska Mileage program, those still retain a lot of value, especially as it comes to booking partner awards.

I guess that would be one thing, Royal Caribbean. I’m guessing you can’t book on a lot of different cruise ships and partner awards. That would be something that would be interesting to know. But the Alaska miles or Atmos points, those cards have tremendous benefits and those miles are really valuable to me.

They were part of my booking for our big summer trip this year with the family on the way back from Singapore on Condor. Condair? Condai- Condor? Condor? Like the bird, a condor? Yeah. The… Yeah. Not Conair. Cannot Conair. There’s no Ni- Nick Cage. He’s not as far as I know- … not gonna be joining us, although we would welcome him.

We’d love to see him, but yes, Condor on the way back from Southeast Asia. And my kids are going to see a concert in [00:13:00] Phoenix because of course they are, and can’t find tickets in Philadelphia, so I’m flying them out there for a 25k round trip. Direct flights from Philly to Phoenix, so should be fun and really valuable miles and points.

Back to your original question, Justin, if someone asked me which one I chose It would not be a difficult choice. Yes, there’s the limitation in that you can’t just get all these different Bank of America cards the same day, and then getting one approved, you’ll probably be less likely to get approved for the next, unless you wait maybe six months or longer, depending on what they think about you, existing relationships with them, maybe if you have checking account, brokerage account and so on.

It’s sometimes difficult to get approved with Bank of America, so if I were a new customer, I didn’t have any credit cards with them, I’d prefer to get the Atmos or Alaska credit cards before this Royal Caribbean. It would be nice to see Royal Caribbean credit card offered by a different bank so there wasn’t [00:14:00] competition with these new Atmos cards.

But I do give them credit. They’re coming out with a lot of new cards. The Atmos card’s released in 2025, and now this is a new product in 2026, so they are innovating.

Yeah. Bank of America, as you indicated I think you can increase your likelihood of success on applications if it’s a personal card like this opening a personal checking account. Bank of America is nationwide, so there’s no geographic restrictions like we have some with some smaller banks.

They do run sign-up bonuses, so always nice to double-dip and stack there. Go ahead and and spend a little money with them, establish a relationship.

And then the same thing if you’re considering a business card or business cards with Bank of America, making sure that you have a banking relationship is also helpful. Good tips there, Justin. Very good. We’ll take a short break and get back to discussion of this Royal Caribbean credit card and other cards with Bank of America.

Let’s get back to discussion about the Royal One Plus Visa Signature credit card, Bank of America, Royal Caribbean. We’ve talked about some of the positives of the card, some competition with the Alaska or Atmos cards, but what if you’re not a flyer?

Are there other cards with Bank of America that can compete? The Bank of America Premium Rewards Card, this is on the personal side, gives a 60,000 point or a [00:19:00] $600 welcome bonus and a flexible $100 airline incidental credit not limited to cruise purchases. These 60,000 points can just be cashed out for $600.

So what do you think? A 70k signup bonus with the Royal Caribbean card minus the 99 annual fee, or a $600 welcome bonus plus a $100 airline incidental credit every calendar year?

We know, Justin, that America loves math. So I think the math is probably in favor of the Premium Rewards Card, right?

You can use those dollars pretty much everywhere. Is the Premium Rewards Card also eligible for a boost if you have a certain amount of money invested with Bank of America? We talked about Bank of America relationships earlier.

Historically, you’ve been able to increase your earning power if you have a large amount of money invested with Bank [00:20:00] of America. What about this, Justin? What about all of them? We don’t have to make a choice. Oh. We just, we do it all of them. I don’t think we can just fire and get five BOA cards in the same day, although if listeners have any data points on sign-up bonus-

or same hour… same day applications… let us know.

It used to be that you just kept applying for Bank of America cards until you got a decline.

Ooh, that sounds fun. So you would do one, approved. Do the next, approved. Do the next, approved. And then they would either decline you or, “We need more information.” It’s harder when you already have several cards with, a fair bit of credit limit.

And I don’t know if that opportunity still exists, but if we go back to the Royal One Plus and the Royal One, if you really wanted to you could potentially apply for the Royal One Plus 70k sign-up bonus after 3K in spend, and then double dip and get just the Royal One. I think that’s 45k for 2,000 in spend with no [00:21:00] annual fee.

America loves math moment. Over $1,000 towards cruising. Maybe that’s something. Or if you have a player two in your household, I’m not sure how that would work, if you can combine points. I’m not very familiar with the Crown & Anchor Society, Justin. What do you know about this very mysterious organization?

New cards, new benefits. I’m not sure if you were to have the player two in the same cabin, maybe you’d be able to apply it if you were to both have Wi-Fi, both have excursions. Maybe they would permit that on the same reservation. Maybe that’s a winning play.

But the Premium Rewards card’s still offering that $600 welcome bonus, the airline incidental credits, and we also have on the Bank of America business side, the Business Advantage Unlimited Cash Rewards MasterCard and the Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards MasterCard, both with $500 welcome bonuses and no annual fee, [00:22:00] versus the 70k on the Royal card with the annual fee, and this is just cold hard cash, Darren, rather than cruise credits.

If your next big goal is to take a big cruise, then this might be the right card for you. Because there’s is a little bit of an edge over just the straight, premium rewards card or customized cash card, which are gonna pay you cash back versus a little more but tied to a currency that you have to use for cruising.

If you’re not sold on a cruise, you’re just looking for another card to add to your portfolio finding one of these cash back cards is the way to go. What do you think? The Royal card comes with the 4X earning. Some of these other Bank of America cards aren’t very good on the earn side, so if you were to do a lot of the onboard gambling, it could tilt this card to being a priority if you’re getting that big 4X on the gaming spend.

That could be interesting, depending on what credit limit they give you, of course. Because if you get approved for this and you’re only getting a [00:23:00] $3,000 credit limit, then you can’t do much with that 4X compared to, of course, a higher credit limit somewhere around 10, 15,000. But we have options, which is nice.

It would just be nicer if some other bank offered this card.

Is that a personal statement, Justin? I can’t give it terrible marks. I can’t give it a D or an F if we were to give it grades. Maybe somewhere around a B or a C for this card, especially if you’re able to redeem these points very easily by calling in or logging in, and this also stacks with offers.

And we also have comp cruises through the myVegas games. I have several videos on myVegas playing these free-to-play mobile games and browser games. And today, recording on May 7th, there are some complimentary cruises with Norwegian. You would just pay taxes and fees rather than, say, $200 off and then [00:24:00] using points to book a cruise.

Maybe those much later in the credit card game, they already have the Atmos cards, they already have the other BOA cards. Maybe they’d wanna go for this Royal card as maybe like the fifth or sixth option.

Fifth or sixth option for BOA. That’s probably right. I’m thinking about BOA requirements now, I think they do have the, what, two, three, four kind of rules. two cards in two months, three cards in 12 months, and four cards in 24 months, something like that.

Maybe you can expand that with a banking relationship. If we’re thinking about, to your point, just Bank of America personal cards, I think the Atmos cards still are at the top of my list. And then I’d have to think about what other cards they offer.

But I hold a number of business cards through there, which have been fairly profitable in the past with boosted earning through investments at Bank of America and, creative ways of paying them [00:25:00] off that used to earn points. If you’re not dead set on a cruise coming up, this is probably a fifth or sixth best card from Bank of America. And there’s competition, of course, from other banks if you’re new to the credit card game. I’m seeing the Chase Sapphire Reserve, a whopping 150,000 point sign-up bonus, up from 125,000, which is really nice.

Of course, tons of credits, a high annual fee on this card, but a huge sign-up bonus. And these 150,000 points aren’t just worth $1,500 like the Royal card, 70k is just worth $700. These are transferable points, and you can get a lot of value in moving them to other programs like Hyatt and various airline programs.

That’s a weakness of this Royal Caribbean credit card is that your 70k points are only ever going to be worth $700 in cruise credits. For sure. That’s the challenge with, whether you’re a co-branded card locked [00:26:00] into a specific brand, whether that’s a cruise line, an airline, a hotel you have to use it with that brand.

The airline miles can be used to book partner awards, where that’s not really the case with cruise lines as far as I know, and certainly not the case with hotel miles or points. I guess maybe Marriott’s still the exception. You can transfer those to airlines, but that’s not done nearly as commonly, at least not for me, as it once was.

Yes. And the Venture X card with Capital One currently 75,000 miles, a $300 annual travel credit, lounge access, and more. Lots of competition with credit cards, and competition is very good as we get these big offers. Spirit Airlines down, Royal Caribbean up.

Yeah, Spirit Airlines has turned into Spirit Halloween, Justin. Any other thoughts on the Royal Caribbean credit card? It’s probably a no for me, Justin. I don’t see the Royal Caribbean cruise line in [00:27:00] my future, and if so, it’s probably gonna be through casino status matching.

Always good to evaluate these new cards when they come out, see if there is opportunity, but that doesn’t mean it’s should be a no for everybody. If this seems like something you’re interested in doing, you already know you’re gonna do some cruising later this year or next year, you’re looking for a new card, you have some expenditures coming up, you got a kid in college like I do, yeah this seems like a good card that would fit that bill.

How about you, Justin? Are you going in? Have you already gone in? No. I’ve been trying to get approved for the Atmos cards, and I’ve been declined. I tried in January. I’m going to try again in July, and hopefully time will heal those wounds of the too many open accounts, too many recent inquiries they complained about in the past.

I’m prioritizing Alaska Airlines Atmos rewards before this Royal Caribbean card, for sure. And for you, the pathway to cruising, I still maintain, and for many others, is the MGM Iconic credit card to gain MGM status and just get a [00:28:00] comp cruise through the MGM Gold status.

That does seem like a good shortcut to status, Justin. I agree. Yes. It’s odd to call the MGM Rewards card a cruise credit card, but it’s at least unlocking cruises with Gold status or, for the high achievers, Platinum status for two cruises a year through high spending.

Moving on to other topics, any upcoming travels for you? You mentioned the concert’s coming up. Anything else that you’re looking at or you’ve booked? We’ll be in Washington, DC this weekend. My wife and I are doing a getaway trip for our joint birthdays, which are just here recently.

We’ll stay at the Waldorf Astoria. We’re using our free night cert from a Surpass spend, Justin. We know we love those Hilton free night certs enjoy that. The weather’s gonna be a little dicey we might be spending some time, more time in the museums there than walking around and enjoying the sunshine.

After that, it’s picking up kids from college [00:29:00] and my middle daughter is unfortunately not taking a points and miles trip, but is taking a trip through school to Greece and Italy, so that’s exciting for her. I tried to bribe her and tell her that, “Hey, I could design a trip on points and miles that would be even better, and they could fly, upfront,” but I would probably have to go along, and that was a deal breaker, Justin

She’s ready to travel without me, and just her friends. Southeast Asian trip coming up later this summer. It will be a busy summer. Kids are doing probably as much or more traveling than I am these days.

But taking advantages of dad’s points and miles. Good news here on the BILT front, you had to mention it, of course. The Waldorf Astoria, Washington, DC is 10 minutes walking distance from the restaurant Oyamel, O-Y-A-M-E-L. You can go there and use $25 in BILT Cash for a discount.

And if your wife also has BILT Palladium, you could split tables, split checks, and get $50 off.

That’s good news, Justin. Thank [00:30:00] you. Just looking at what we’re gonna do for dinner, so I’ll take a look at that. It’s just one BILT card in our household for right now, although, yeah, maybe that’s something we should consider as well. We’ll take a look when we’re in DC.

Would be nice to save on some dining while out there in addition to all the Hilton credits, of course. That could be good. And yes, we will have a BILT bulletin coming up. I plan for Rio, returning to Rio and Las Vegas mainly to get Hyatt qualifying nights. There’s a new gimmick. They’re upping the rates slightly, but you get a $25 food credit.

The rates instead of 25 to $30, it’s around 30 to $35. I booked in at 32 a night, and I get a $25 food credit. If you were to value that food credit same as cash, it’s sounding like $7 a night at Rio Las Vegas, including the breakfast buffet, [00:31:00] if you have Hyatt Globalist status or book with a guest of honor reward.

There’s a fire sale at Rio, and I’m definitely taking advantage. I’m guessing there’ll be a big crowd there again, Justin, with those prices, so you won’t be the only one enjoying the Globalist breakfast. I saw some pictures of you and the crew of Globalists there having breakfast last time you were out in Vegas.

That’s right. And I’ll be in Miami May 23rd to the 25th going on a Virgin Voyages cruise out of Miami, and then Vermont coming up June 3rd through the 5th using the edit credit at the Kimpton Taconic IHG property. And Vegas at Rio will be June 7th to the 12th. So listeners, if you will also be in Vegas, let me know.

We’ll meet for breakfast or perhaps other times too.

Always good to meet up, Justin talk miles and points, enjoy a breakfast [00:32:00] or BILT Bucks meal, BILT Bucks buffet. I don’t know. I’ll work on that one. I do plan on using it at a Mediterranean restaurant in Vegas, Zatinya, I believe is how it’s pronounced. I went to a different one last time, so I’ll make the tour of the BILT redemptions and see which one is best.

Another B. Best BILT Bucks redemptions. We’ll get there, Justin. All the bonuses. All the bonuses, for sure. Thank you very much for coming on. Always a pleasure, Justin. Enjoy talking points and miles with you, and look forward to doing it again soon. Thanks everyone for listening, and stay tuned for future episodes.
