Maximize Rakuten with TrakRak.com

TrackRak.com Review | Real-Time Rakuten Rate Alerts to Maximize Points, Miles & Cash Back

Justin Vacula of the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast welcomes Carrie from TrackRak.com to discuss how TrackRak helps points and miles users monitor Rakuten shopping portal rates and get real-time alerts when earning rates increase.

Recorded June 30, 2026, this episode covers how TrackRak works, why Carrie built the tool, and how customizable text and email alerts can help users avoid missing elevated Rakuten offers. Carrie explains her frugal background, how she got into points and miles, and why she wanted to create a simple Rakuten-only solution for tracking shopping portal rates.

Carrie explains that TrackRak scans Rakuten rates throughout the day and uses smart alerts to avoid sending repeated notifications for the same elevated rate. The site also includes a suggestion box, top-20 deals, and historical rate charts with about 600 days of data, with the goal of eventually showing around three years of historical Rakuten rate history.

These charts can help users set realistic alert thresholds and understand when a rate is actually worth chasing. Justin and Carrie also review TrackRak pricing tiers, including the Free plan, Basic at $2.99 per month, Premium at $6.99 per month, and an Annual plan at $60 per year. They discuss how the tool can fit into a broader points and miles strategy, especially for people stacking Rakuten with credit card rewards, shopping deals, in-store offers, Rakuten Dining, and elevated credit card bonuses.

The episode also covers TrackRak’s browser extension for activating Rakuten in-store offers, Carrie’s Croatia business-class redemption, upcoming prediction features, and a listener coupon code, HGTP25, for 25% off.

Fight the war on happiness, pick up the gold. Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast breaks the mold

You’re listening to the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast. I’m your host, Justin Vacula, here to help you make money, save money, and travel the world at low cost with credit card points, miles, benefits, and loyalty programs. For today’s episode, Carrie from TrackRak.com, T-R-A-C-K-R-A-K.com, joins me to talk about her special tools to send alerts about increased rates with the Rakuten shopping portal and more.

On with [00:01:00] today’s episode, recorded June 30th, 2026. Welcome to the show, Carrie. Hi, Justin. Thank you for having me. Yeah, thanks for coming on. You have a different type of tool here, Trackrak.com, T-R-A-C-K-R-A-K.com. But before we get into that, how did you get started with miles and points? I’ve always been very frugal and maximizing every dollar is something that I actually find enjoyable.

I think it’s fun. I used to use Ebates back in the day what Rakuten used to be called. I used that for many years, and I always opted then for cash back. That was the only option then. And I racked up a lot of cash over the years but I did find it frustrating when I would make a purchase only to see the next day or two it had increased and I would have to decide, am I gonna return this and rebuy it, or just let it be and be frustrated?

I also love to travel, but I didn’t do that nearly [00:02:00] as much as I wanted to. So as time went on, I did become more interested in points and miles, and heard that Rakuten was offering the option of earning miles rather than cash back. I was also finding different travel groups and social media travel groups and it was just, a learning process, and it just became more and more eye-opening to me that I could use these points and miles to travel more.

So that made my passion for maximizing my spending even more pronounced. How did you find out about Miles and Points? Was it a website maybe you searched on your own? Was it a recommendation? It was a recommendation from someone locally who was part of a large travel group that they used to work for, and I became part of that travel group.

It just grew from there. Nice. I know that it’s tough to get people in the game, so it’s nice to hear that someone told you about Miles and Points, you followed up, and you’ve had a lot of success. Yes. My strategy’s a little different [00:03:00] and I just like to keep things super simple, and have the bare minimum.

So even though that is definitely one way to be successful to me, simplicity was key. And when I decided to build this website, that was one of my priorities, it was to keep it as simple and quick and easy as possible for someone like me, who doesn’t wanna feel overwhelmed with this whole process. And you made the website, so you’ve had previous technical expertise?

I did build all of the front end. I am a web developer and I did though have to hire, I do have a developer backend engineer that helped with some of the more complex parts of it. So it was a team effort for sure. And tell us about your website or your tool, TrackRak.com

it sends alerts, text and email alerts, to alert you about increased rates with Rakuten. So [00:04:00] basically, it’s customized Rakuten alerts that you can get straight to your phone or email. All we do is focus on Rakuten . So if you’re like me and don’t really want to deal with a bunch of different extensions and comparing different portals then this is for you, and just focused on Rakuten.

One of the differentiators is that we scan all day long. We scan the Rakuten rates all day long. Rakuten rates do change at all times of the day, unlike what some people believe. I believe that a lot of people are under the impression that Rakuten changes their numbers once a day, like around midnight, and that is absolutely not the case.

One example is on Black Friday you would think that the rates would happen at midnight or very early in the morning, but actually, it was around 5:00 PM. I’m in Mountain Time, so it was around 5:00 PM in my time zone that all of the rates changed. And so Track Rak users were alerted the night [00:05:00] before before a lot of other people even knew that they had already dropped those big Black Friday increased rates.

So that’s that’s one differentiator. We also send text alerts and not just email. A lot of users seem to prefer text just for the more immediate notifications that they get. We also have smart alerts, which is a way of filtering alerts intelligently instead of sending the same notification every day as long as the rate stays the same every day, you’re not gonna get spammed every single day with that same alert.

All we do is alert you once your parameters are met, and then only again as your rate is increasing. So you’re not going to get multiple alerts of the same exact number. And this will help reduce alert fatigue or, you starting to ignore those emails or texts that come in repetitively.

The smart alerts are nice because sometimes I’ll see on a blog or a website, [00:06:00] today there’s an increased payout on Dell, an increased payout on this site or that site, and it’s nice to have that rather than just buying when it’s maybe 2x or 3x that, oh, here’s a 10x or a 15x.

And users can set a threshold so that they’ll only get notifications when it gets to a certain point That’s exactly right. Dell, they might set it at 12%. And that, that actually is a good segue to the next thing I was going to explain, and that’s the suggestion box. When you are on the TrackRak website and you’re setting an alert, and you enter in the store name, immediately pops up what we call a suggestion box.

And that way, if you’re not familiar, and a lot of people aren’t, with the, range that certain stores have then you would have no idea what number to set your alert at. This suggestion box will tell you what it currently is at, the lowest it’s been, and the highest it’s been, so that you can set a realistic alert, and [00:07:00] therefore be more likely to actually hit that and get notified.

We have our historical charts. We currently have around 600 days of data, and that’s just because that’s as long as we’ve been around and had the charts. But every day we’re growing, and we’re going to keep three years of data so that users can look back and look at patterns and trends and try to predict, how often does, say, PetSmart hit 25%.

Am I willing to wait a month, or should I maybe set an alert for 15% because that’s more likely to happen in the next week? Those are the different ways that we set ourselves apart, and we do have some other I think very exciting, we have a couple features coming up. One should be ready in the next few weeks.

The other one is predictor where it will look back on the historical data and give predictions as to when, the next spike will be And you have many different tiers, many different pricing models, the free, the basic, [00:08:00] premium, and annual.

Can you describe those? Anyone can try it out for free. That’s just one alert, and you are given 21 days of historical data for that plan. Then we have Basic, which is $2.99 a month, and that gives you 180 days of historical data, and that’s up to five alerts. And then Premium, our Premium plan is $6.99 a month, and our Annual plan those both give you the exact same inclusions, the same perks.

That’s unlimited alerts. You have a top 20 deals page which shows you the top 20 cash and percent deals every day on Rakuten. It will give you three years of charts, of historical data. And we also have an extension that will activate all of the Rakuten in-store offers with just one click of a button.

That’s also included. The Annual plan is, a better deal as the Premium because it saves you around $20 a year Very good. And there’s a coupon [00:09:00] code for listeners. It’s HGTP25, 25% off HGTP for Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast Yes, that’s right. That’s 25% off any plan for as long as you remain signed up.

AmericaLovesMath once again, if you’re gonna go with the $6.99 a month, or go with the annual for $60 a year, you’ll get the 25% off whichever one you want to sign up for. And you could always start with the free tier if you want, so that’s a good way to support the show.

What about Rakuten Dining? That’s part of the in-store offer. If you have the premium or the annual plan, and you go in, I go in about once a week, whenever I remember, and get everything activated that will include all those restaurants that are in there.

Nice. So that’s a good way to stack, and often there are some deals like NordVPN is giving back 100% back with Rakuten or some other service, meal kit deliveries [00:10:00] and so on. Do you have alerts of when these deals go out? Yes. Anything that’s on Rakuten, you can set up an alert for, and that’s, the top 20 deals page is for…

Yeah, some people will sign up for things they don’t even need because it’s 100% back or it’s 95% back, and it’s almost a no-brainer to sign up for some of those meal kits and get all of those points and almost get it for free, and then get all of the points on top of it. And now the Rakuten points could be linked with Bilt, so you can get those as Alaska, Hyatt, or other currencies.

Any other tips for stacking Rakuten or getting even more value? I do know that the Rakuten credit card gives you four times points on many Rakuten purchases, so that would be one way.

And then just using the right credit card when you’re making a purchase. Rakuten lets you use any credit card, but of course, as long as you know the best credit card [00:11:00] to use on dining or on travel or, pet food or Amazon, then you can maximize the points that you’re gonna be getting back.

Yes, the Rakuten credit card, I recently got approved for it. Not the most exciting card, but for those later in the game, it can make sense when you’ve gotten all of the heavier hitters. or most of them in the space, 4X on Rakuten purchases, 10X back on Rakuten dining, 2X on groceries and dining, and 1X on everything else.

There’s also a $100 sign-up bonus or maybe 10,000 points if you can get it in that way. Some benefits of this card, but again, probably one for people later in the game who’ve already gotten the much stronger cards

Yes, I just got the Chase Sapphire Reserve and that, that is one that I’m definitely trying to maximize my spending on. Have you been able to stack some of the Chase Sapphire Reserve [00:12:00] benefits with Rakuten? I have. I, when trying to use the StubHub credit, I set an alert on TrackRak to wait until it had an elevated offer.

Then I checked out using PAZE so I will be going to a concert and be very happy that I got all of those points out of it. Oh, good, yes. P-A-Z-E. The PAZE craze has been going on, and I might be eating at Dunkin’ Donuts through September. We’ll see how it goes.

Avocado toast and egg muffin sandwiches. Fan of the podcast Dave Ramsey says you shouldn’t see the inside of a restaurant if you have any debt, of course, but we found a way to save money on food and travel and everything else.

Another interesting Rakuten bonus I’ve been seeing is bonus points when signing up for certain credit [00:15:00] cards, Chase, Bank of America, and probably other issuers too.

Do you have any tools to track these? Yeah. Those are included in our stores list, so if you want to be alerted when those happen, you can set your alerts using those stores those credit card company names. That’s a pretty good one because you can stack with those, as sometimes Chase will say, “Hey, we’re offering an increased sign-up bonus for a Freedom Unlimited.”

Maybe Bank of America ups a sign-up bonus as well, and if you can get an extra 20,000, 30,000 Rakuten points out of it, sometimes that can be even more than the credit card sign-up bonus. Yeah, absolutely. I remember when they had one not that long ago and everybody was jumping on it Yeah, they’ve been pretty common in recent months here in 2026, and maybe we’ll see more of those in the future Yes, and as new ones are added, they get picked up in our scans that we do all day long, so they’ll always be included on the TrackRak website.

[00:16:00] Any other interesting maybe 95 or 100% rebates on deals? I mentioned NordVPN, MealKits. We’ve seen LifeLock before. Any other interesting companies or products?

On our top, top 20 deals page for today for example, we have Spokeo Norton- What wait … Antivirus is up there. What i- what is, Wait, w- I don’t even know what Spokeo is. That’s, that’s- 95% back, 100% back. Why not? It’s 100. Yeah. I don’t know what it is, but I need it.

100. McAfee, ExpressVPN, a lot of those are the common ones up there. TicketClub, Yeah, those are the percent back. Let’s see if there’s a interesting cash back option. Liquid Web, sign now. That’s almost always at the top. Xfinity Mobile, that’s number three for today $300 cash back.

And then as you were just mentioning the Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card is way up there, too. If it’s the same one, Spokeo is a people search website that [00:17:00] aggregates data from online and offline sources. Okay, now we know. Learn more about the people around you, reconnect with loved ones, avoid scammers and cheaters-

and maybe some other uses. Okay. You need it. I’m not gonna say if I need that or not. Maybe sign up, but don’t use it. Yeah, I guess I should check this page more often because there are some interesting companies here.

Maybe- … you’ll get some hiking equipment for Antarctica even though you weren’t planning on going if it’s 100% back. That’s right, and then I’ll have to start planning a trip to Antarctica.

And speaking of trips, any- Yeah … recent trips or trips upcoming? Yes. I tend to be a bit of a points hoarder. And over time and in continuing to learn about this I realize that’s not the best idea, as they can devalue over time, and it’s good to, to use ’em and then just replenish them.

So I did do that recently on a trip to Croatia that I returned from just a couple weeks ago. [00:18:00] And I finally did use a bunch of points for my first ever business class flights. I know some people are probably laughing because that’s all you ever do, but not me. This was my first time, and it was a very interesting and good feeling to not dread the flights like I normally would and to actually wish that it was longer.

Not like how many minutes are left, but being disappointed when I saw there was only an hour left of my flight. That was a mindset change for me, and I’m definitely looking forward to using points on a future trip.

This one’s not nearly as exciting. It’s to Wisconsin to see some family, and what I did for that is I did set an alert on TrackRak for a few rental car companies and when I set my alert, it was currently, it was at 4%, and I saw through my charts and suggestion box that it frequently goes up.

So as soon as it hit, it ended up within a few days of me setting it, went up to 11%. And so [00:19:00] instead of getting what would’ve been around $11 cash back or, the equivalent in points because I waited a couple days and got my alert and then booked I ended up getting around $31 back in the equivalent in points.

I got about an extra $20 just by setting that alert, and that’s just one example of how this can easily pay for itself, in just a couple of things that you might buy online It’s a nice benefit of the hobby not only to save money on travel, but to travel better.

The business class lie-flat seats, more space on the plane, it just makes the journey all the better. Again, fan of the show, Dave Ramsey, of course, “Oh, just pay for your own goddang vacation,” but surely we wouldn’t be paying 2,000, 3,000 or more for a flight, but the hobby allows us to do that using points Absolutely.

It was a much more enjoyable experience using points on that business class flight and [00:20:00] all of the perks that came with it Flight upgrades, hotel upgrades, a lot of lifestyle upgrades at very little cost. That’s correct. I can’t remember the last time I paid cash for a hotel. That’s probably one of the easiest ones.

With some flights, you might have to pay those taxes and fees, or sometimes it makes sense to book those cash rates, as I’ve been going through a lot of my travel bank with United, but even that was funded with different credit card benefits.

Back to TrackRac, any upcoming features? You do note on the website that you plan on having an app. Yes. That I don’t have a timeline for. We are mobile friendly, the website.

I know that’s not the same as an app, but you can certainly go to the website on your phone and do all of the same, do everything you can do on a regular computer. And as mentioned we are working on the prediction so that you can go into our charts and see into the future as to what might happen.

Carrie: I think this feature is something you will not [00:21:00] find on any of the other similar tools out there and I’m not even gonna mention it, but it will be two or three weeks. In the development world it always seems to take a little longer, so I’d say max a month, and that we’ll have a really cool new feature, and that will just be for the premium or annual users of TrackRac.

Okay, so maybe live in late July, early August 2026? Yes, that is my hope, and I do think that’s a reasonable expectation. And we will announce that on our Instagram, Facebook we’ll send out emails to all of our users. The word will get out. You mentioned social media, so what are the handles for different pages where people can follow TrackRak?

Yes. We’re mainly, I’d say Instagram would be the main one and that’s

TrackRakcashback, and then on Facebook it’s just TrackRak, which you’ve spelled multiple times, so hopefully people…

ooh, I like this one. Rakuten Big Stack Event Cashback, so it’s definitely some rhyming there, too. Yes. TrackRak [00:22:00] has your back. It’s an easy one to rhyme with. A big hack is one of the posts, Big Week Hack. Yeah. Yes. There’ll be more rhymes in the future.

You can choose the cashback, but also points if you would like, whether it’s the membership rewards, the BILT rewards, or perhaps other currencies. Yes, that’s correct. But the rhyming is appreciated. Thank you. And I think it’s a strength, too, that you’re not trying to optimize on all of the portals, that you’re just focusing on Rakuten.

There’s more specialization, so more likely users can see those elevated alerts. There’s different strategies and different types of users, You like to have a lot of credit cards. I, I have five or six. That’s a lot to some people, even, some people have 20, 30, or more.

It’s- Different for every person and what their strategy is. And for me, I just assumed if this is what I wanted, there would be others that felt the same way. I just don’t want to have too many other extensions and too many other portals to even worry about.

And [00:23:00] Rakuten has also been pretty reliable from my experience, whereas some shopping portals you can think, “Oh, this is the first time I ever heard of this,” and then they either don’t pay out or there’s some kind of higher minimum that you need to cash out.

But even with Rakuten, if you do a small amount, they still send that quarterly payout from my experience. I don’t want to forget that I might have miles on this obscure shopping portal somewhere that I use once a year. It’s just easier for me to keep everything in one place.

And yes I have found Rakuten to be quite reliable. I do go back every couple of months and just check to make sure everything checks out, and on the rare occasion it doesn’t, I’ve found their customer service to be very good And you’re also friends with Brooke from CardPointers, or at least Brooke introduced me to you.

I’ve known Brooke for a while through one of the travel groups that she used to work for. And we knew each other for quite some time before finally meeting in person. This was maybe six [00:24:00] months ago at a Denver meetup, and that was so nice to finally meet her in person, and she’s just been such a huge supporter and I also am just a huge fan of CardPointers, as you mentioned in your ad, and that I think CardPointers and TrackRak, go together beautifully.

That way you know what card to use. You have your Chase or your Amex offers automatically loaded. You’re using Rakuten. That’s the stacking that I do on a daily basis. So yes, Brooke, shout out to Brooke and to CardPointers. And both purple color themes I’ve been seeing.

That’s right, yes. Rakuten and CardPointers, there’s definitely a trend there. And more stacking. Have you been able to stack the Rakuten dining with Resy, with InKind, with Chase Sapphire exclusive tables, any of those programs? I did with the Chase Sapphire exclusive tables. That was just last week because it was getting close to the end of the month and I had to use it.

It was a good [00:25:00] excuse to get out and go to a nicer restaurant than I normally would. I did stack that with exclusive tables and, then got the $150 credit.

We like the stack with TrackRak. I should have you write for me. Very good. And listeners, if you’ve liked what you’ve heard, you’re listening this far, so you probably have, it’s coupon code HGTP25, Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast 25. HGTP25 for a 25% discount on TrackRak.com.
