Fight the war on happiness. Pick up the gold. Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast breaks the mold.
You’re listening to the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast, I’m your host, Justin Vacula, here to help you make money, save money, and travel the world at next to no cost with credit card points, miles, benefits, and loyalty programs. Carissa Rawson from Rove joins me to talk about what’s new for the month of March, 2026.
Learn about transfer bonuses for Scandinavian Airlines, Japan Airlines, gift cards.com promotion and more. Also [00:01:00] we’ll discuss about what’s coming soon to rove. On with today’s episode recorded, March 13th, 2026. Welcome back to the show, Carissa. Hey, thanks for having me. Multiple times coming on the show.
We could do a monthly rove report and this could be that first one. Yeah, I’m happy to. I feel like we have big news probably every month, i’m glad to be here. Thanks. And one of those big news items was SAS Scandinavian Airlines. We just launched them as a partner and it’s been really good. We have a 20% transfer bonus through April 8th. There’s some really interesting sweet spots. We’re the only US transfer partner. There used to be Mesa RIP Mesa.
We transferred to one-to-one ratio. War on happiness. No more Mesa, but we do have more from Rove. And for those that might not know about Rove, if they are new to this, can you give us a quick description of Rove? Rove is a loyalty [00:02:00] program that’s unique in that it doesn’t require a credit card to earn transferable miles.
Most of the time when you wanna get flexible points and miles, like an Amex point, a Citi Point, a Capital one point you need to have one of their credit cards. Rove doesn’t do that. Rove is all you do.
It’s free to sign up. You just use your phone number and, you book flights, you book hotels, or you do online shopping and all of those activities will earn you Rove miles. At this point we’ve got 15 transfer partners 14 airlines, all of which are one-to-one, and then one hotel, which is Accor, which is at one and a half to one as a transfer ratio.
You can also redeem your Rove miles on platform at actually a pretty good rate. Surprisingly for flights and hotels. If you don’t wanna bother with transferring.
Good. And with those transfer partners, as far as I know, you can’t get an SAS or a Scandinavian Airlines credit card, so this is one big strength of Rove. Yeah, absolutely. SAS has quite a few interesting sweet spots. If you ever take a look at their award charts, which by the way, [00:03:00] thankfully they still have award charts.
There are some really good ones, if you look at, business class across the Atlantic on SAS metal, it’s actually only 60,000 points in order to get over there. With a transfer bonus you’re doing pretty well. America loves math, so it wouldn’t be that one for one in this case with a transfer bonus, maybe somewhere around 50,000 or a little bit less than that.
Yeah, live math, always fun, right? Don’t make me do the live math, please. All right. How about Japan? Japan Airlines is also some recent news with Rove. We got so much, so many people talking about JAL. It launched two weeks ago, and for anybody who’s not familiar, JAL is the flag carrier of Japan.
It’s a one world partner. You gotta look at the award charts, man, like the sweet spots abound. People are obviously very interested in going to Tokyo and JAL has an incredible business and first class product. There are always people setting a billion alerts trying to get the one seat, two seat available for those flights.
[00:04:00] And what’s interesting is JAL Miles have been pretty difficult to earn. Historically, capital One has them and but not at a one one ratio and BILT has them. What about the First National Bank of Omaha? The answer to everything is more credit cards, but of course Rove as well. That’s funny. I’m gonna Google that. Do they have any other transfer partners or is it just JAL? It’s just a JAL credit card. Okay, fine. Like a co-brand credit card? Yeah. Yes. You can use your co-branded JAL credit card to purchase JAL flights on Rove and earn rove miles and then transfer them to JAL, and then you’ll just be swimming in JAL miles.
There you go. JAL releases award space for those premium seats. Before anybody else, like any other partners. So that’s really cool. We launched two weeks ago and we launched it with an absolutely insane 50% transfer bonus through the end of the month. And that’s huge because with the exception of one single other transfer bonus that outdid hours, that’s the most that anyone has ever done, with JAL miles.
One way that people earn the Rove Miles is through gift [00:05:00] cards.com. You frequently bonus certain portals, gift cards.com is one of them, and there’s a lot of stacking that can go on as you posted in the Rove Insiders Facebook group that you can spend, I believe it’s a hundred dollars on gift cards.com and they’re offering a $10 bonus card for doing so.
Yeah. And that’s fantastic, because I think it’s for the Visa and MasterCard gift cards. Those levy those fees when you buy them, so basically negates the fee or more than pays for itself. And then of course, if you stack it with shopping through Rove shopping, then you are just net positive on everything.
These online MasterCards, these are virtual MasterCards, virtual visa. People can use those to pay maybe medical bills, other expenses where these virtual cards are accepted. Yeah. Or utilities, things like that. You can use a card that’s giving two x points, 2% back, whatever the case might be. And instead of paying directly, you [00:06:00] can rack up a $10 bonus card, some rove points
and earlier today, PayPal was offering a bonus, 5% back up to $20 cash back on purchases. This seems to be a really good way to go about things. Maybe something like a personal Hyatt credit card with Chase getting the one X, the progress toward qualifying nights progress toward a free night certificate, a 15,000 spend other cards giving the two x or somewhere around there. Yeah.
All right. Another topic. Dave Grossman at Miles Talk, posted an article with a title using Rove for 14,000 miles, first class flights to Mexico.
Yeah. I actually saw this and I thought it was really interesting going through the math and seeing how he talks about it. He’s taken advantage of the 50% transfer bonus over from JAL or over to JAL from Rove miles.
And he’s saying that he booked American Airlines and JAL charges [00:07:00] 42,000 miles round trip. And that’s a really decent price, and he was able to get it all the way down to 14,000 miles one way using the 50% bonus. Very smart use. All the math and all the alliances, partnerships and bonuses coming together for a really good redemption.
Yeah, absolutely. Some quick hits on what’s happening with Rove. What do we have coming in the near future? We’re recording in March of 2026. What might we see in quarter two? I think even before Q2, Justin, I’ll be honest we are bowling straight ahead, we’ve got more partners on the way.
We sent out a survey asking about what people wanted to see for Rove Elite status. We’re working on trying to build that out. When, if you spend enough with Rove, you’ll get, things like extra bonus miles on your hotels and maybe you’ll get, free lounge access and et cetera, et cetera.
We’re looking at seeing what we can feasibly build in. I’m really excited to put that forward ’cause it’s definitely a labor of love and a ton of effort. We also have Cardlink [00:08:00] offers coming out. Maybe we’ll talk a little bit more about that later because I think it will help address some feedback just in general that we’ve been getting on Rove and I feel a little bit inundated with, I won’t lie ’cause I tend to be front row for these comments.
And then we also have the app. The app is releasing into beta, I think very soon. Both for Android and Apple. we have a new flight search already designed that has been timidly released and unreleased like 12 times because we’re just making sure it’s as un buggy as possible.
So that’ll be coming out too, and it’s really good. It basically will live search all cabins at all times across paid and award flights, which is really cool. Rove is growing, more features coming, and Rove is also hiring. Yeah. If you know somebody, there’s a lot of engineers. It’s a lot of engineers.
Like one social person, some app people, stuff like that. Where would they reach out for hiring LinkedIn or if you wanna email me carissa@rovemiles.com, please don’t spam me. But yeah, email. It’s not exactly a very [00:09:00] special secret email. You’ve inherited $40 million and you need to provide your wire information today.
Is it for my Nigerian prince? ’cause in that case, I’m all in. All right. Do it live. And that’s Carissa, C-A-R-I-S-S-A.
Yeah. Some listener feedback, as you’ve alluded to. One listener says sometimes payment with the portal is denied.
Yeah. That does happen. We’ve been working on this for a long time because obviously it’s such a bad experience when you’re using a shopping portal and you’ve gone through all the steps and you’re waiting. For your rewards. And then they seemingly never come and then they end up getting denied.
And often it’s because the terms were unclear or there’s best practices involved. Don’t use other extensions. Don’t use ad blockers. Don’t break tracking. Don’t start with a full shopping cart.
There are a million different reasons why it can get denied, but that doesn’t mean that it feels good when it [00:10:00] happens. I have written a blog post to talk about best practices for shopping. I did it at the Orlando meetup that we just had, and it went over really well. So I’ll be posting that just for clarifying information and helping people get the rewards that they want.
In terms of tracking, denied is different from tracking. If there are tracking issues whether that’s because you have an ad block, whatever, we’re doing Cardlink offers and Cardlink offers are not us relying on the merchant to report the transaction, which is what most affiliate shopping is.
In this case, we’re just looking at, where credit card is doing because it’s linked directly to Rove and so we’re able to pull attribution from there. So that’s coming out. And that will help cure a lot of these issues. And where would listeners go about getting support? If a transaction is declined, they’ve paid for whatever it was, but then the shopping portal says no, or they don’t get the bonus Rove miles.
We have the shopping trip section and after 10 days have passed, which is the [00:11:00] minimum threshold you can go ahead and make report for missing or incorrect miles. All right. Very good. And part of the hiring is finding someone to help with that support rather than Carissa
fronting all these emails. I get it. I get it. The amount of times Rakuten has screwed me, I get it. I am a living example. And I understand the frustration, but it’s just really hard. There’s no better way to go around it other than cardlinked offer, and that’s what we’re doing. We’re also building out something called Merchant reliability scores to help with this. We’ve already done estimated pending and posting timelines and shopping trips, but reliability scores will show up every time you click on a merchant and it will use our realtime data and show you, okay, the merchant pays out this percentage of the time.
This is how often we don’t have to have issues with it, and you can know it’s very reliable. And then once a merchant gets crappy, once we concede that they’re crappy auto ban gone on, we’re already disabling bad actors. It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does banned.
So this will help cut down on that as well. All right. Fighting back against the [00:12:00] war on happiness with these unreliable portals promising but not delivering. Yeah, it’s really frustrating. We’ll take a break from the frustration and get to some announcements.

I know that there’s probably quite a bit of overlap between our two communities. But really meetups are where the real information is exchanged.
I highly recommend attending. And you’ve had several in New York, right? Yeah, I’ve done quite a few. I’m doing basically monthly, not just in New York, but also just around because, people are interested, so I’m doing it. They’re usually quite casual. Maybe we’re having dinner or drinks or, the, we did one in Orlando, which was gigantic and we ended up having presentations.
It’s been good. St. Louis coming up as well. I plan on being there. Are you coming to the St. Louis one? Oh, that’s good. St. Louis Hyatt Regency at the Arch. Yeah. Cool. Okay. Yeah, there’s St. Louis and then there’s Vegas as well, which I think, are you gonna, are you coming to that? Yes. I will be in Vegas, so I’ll be arriving on Sunday though, so that might make things a little complicated, but we’ll see.
That’s okay. ’cause I’m I by popular demand, I create an event for Sunday as well. Yes. So hopefully the flights are on time and all is well. Yeah. Yeah I always love talking on your podcast. And you know what’s funny, Justin, is I’m going to all of these events and I see all of these people, and without fail, you get brought up
maybe five to 10 times. Every single time I’m at an event, like popular. Nice. And we’ll continue that trend with the Rove report. Yeah. Hope The Roving Hurdy Gurdy Band. Yeah. Excellent. Let’s talk about putting Rove Miles to use. What are some upcoming trips that you have where you’re using Rove Miles?
I did do the Maldives a little bit ago. Oh, you know [00:17:00] what? Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Oh, tomorrow, March 13th, recording. This is March 14th, traveling for Pi Day, where I think some pizza somewhere, maybe speedway seven 11.
Discounted $3 and 14 cents. That’s funny. Maybe I should do that. I tend to use Rove miles quite a lot for those random, one night stays where I just need to be at an airport motel or whatever. And I need it to be cheap. Tomorrow I am flying to French Polynesia and I have a one night stay in Tahiti and I use my Rove miles for that.
It worked out pretty well. Any other travel coming with other instruments, other miles and points, other benefits. Yep. I have one hobby and it’s going to French Polynesia, ’cause I’m doing that again the Conrad. My family and I go every year or have gone every year because it was very possible to book multiple rooms using your points.
Three rooms on points and we all got upgraded to Overwater Villas, which was really nice. So we’re doing that June 25th to the 30th. The unfortunate thing is that last year they increased their [00:18:00] prices from 120,000 Hilton points per night to 200,000, which is insane. Because you book into a suite, you don’t book into an over water villa.
Whereas at the Conrad Maldives, it’s sold 200,000 and you book directly into gen over water villa. I think this will probably be the last year that we’re doing that.
Ah. Ah, devaluation such a pain man. It really is. What about the free night certificates? Have you used those in Bora? I haven’t because it was never it wasn’t worth it back then, I was using it for the Waldorf Maldives. And again, the property’s nice and it’s being renovated right now, but it’s not worth spending a whole free night certificate if you can use it somewhere else. That’s 200, 250,000, points a night. I have Calala Island coming up. I’m going to be staying there for four nights and they’re paying me to stay there on top of my free night certificate.
$2,510 for a promotion. Do you know, I actually went to Calala in 2020. Oh, it was the little feather in my hat right here. I was the very first points and miles person to go and review it because [00:19:00] Hyatt had that partnership with SLH and the second, the day that it joined the program, I booked it.
And I went out there with I don’t know, a week or two notice. And it was fantastic. I got this scoop, so to speak, and the problem was, is that I went and it was like March 3rd, 2020, and then the whole world imploded and I got, you get stuck on the private island. We made it off the island and I’ll never forget.
I’m sitting there and we go, it’s my stepmom and I, and she’s a nervous traveler in the first place, but we are at the Managua airport, and I walk up to the checking counter for Avianca and we go to check in and the guy just looks at us and he says, oh, no yeah.
Then they shut the borders. And you can’t leave. Yeah. We said what do we do? And he is fight’s canceled. And I was like, okay. And he is I guess you just stay here. And then he walked away. That was it. He just left. He just left. Sorry. Your problem not mine.
Do you have a valid ticket that you could use? No. Oh, we’re sorry. Oh, you’re not a customer here? [00:20:00] Yeah. They just left the desk, so we ended up staying an extra night at the Hilton Princess and then flying, we’re going back to la but we had to fly to Spirit had one flight and American had one flight to Miami.
We went all the way to Miami and then made our way back via Charlotte to la. That was my Calala experience. Ah, but otherwise very good. The ultra all inclusive aspect. Yeah. Make sure you take advantage of it. They’ve got all of these crazy inclusions it’s not just a paddleboard.
They took us on by private speedboat to all the different islands and showed us around. It was very cool. Please pack every ounce of sunscreen you own. The very first day, my lips blistered. Oh, it’s very strong. Don’t they give you sunscreen? There’s like natural. SPF 30, but if I’m pasty and you’re pasty, I’ve seen you.
Yeah. Bring copious quantities, I swear. It’s very strong. All right. Good to know. Yeah. Any recent credit cards or upcoming credit cards? I’m still at LOL 24 and crying about it. [00:21:00] Oh, you’re trying to get under to get more chase cards. The alleged premium Hyatt card that may or may not be coming out post devaluation one day.
We’ll see. I don’t see that. Should I stay with Hyatt? I dunno, man. Oh. Hyatt in Crisis. I know. I’m not even Globalist. I’m just an Explorist this year. It’s should I? I don’t know. We’ll see. Maybe more Amex business cards. Anything going on. Maybe Amex biz? Actually, Amex, I do have to cancel two of them.
And maybe I’m looking, I keep looking for upgrade offers on my gold card ’cause that’s how I keep getting them in the first place. So we’ll see. New York, you’ve been living in New York for some time. And a refresh listeners, was this a move for Rove? Did Rove want you to move out to New York? Did you choose to?
What were the circumstances there? Yeah, I’m a California girl who moved to New York for work and it’s definitely different, that’s for sure. I love that there’s a lot to do. I like that there’s such a large community there for points of miles. That’s really cool. But I miss the good weather and I [00:22:00] miss the space and the sunshine.
Hopefully in the spring it’ll get better. And you have to go over to New Jersey or PA to do the online casino gaming. I have to collect more phones. More phones for my Vegas. You could do that anywhere. I’ve been going into Jersey multiple times per a week, two or three times a week, stopping at stores and doing the online gaming.
But the stores quite limited in New York. Yeah. I’m only like a 20 minute path right away from Jersey, so it’s not bad. Oh, there you go. Okay. Transit into New Jersey and set up shop at a Panera, Dunkin Donuts or something else. I do have a $7 monthly Dunkin credit. Don’t you know? Oh yes. I tell them past podcast guest
Deker said, doesn’t that seem weird going into Dunkin Donuts and asking for a $7 gift card? And I tell them, Hey, I have an Amex credit to use, so I’d like to get a $7 gift card. That’s how much the credit is. Why don’t you just do it on the app? Oh, I like getting the physical card. Why? You can resell the [00:23:00] physical card.
Oh, you’ll sell the $7 card? Absolutely. I’m not really interested in much from Dunkin Donuts. And then I have the SIP Club with Panera that covers coffee for me. That’s hilarious. At this point, I just have a hundred Dunkin dollar donuts, things like all the D’s. I gotta get my annual fee money back one way or another.
So that’s really one part of the process. But I have also been going to the Cheesecake Factory during their happy hour, Monday through Friday, four to six, I believe. And they have what they call small plates for $10 and 50 cents, so that knocks out that $10 monthly dining credit. I’ve been a big fan of that.
Yeah, that’s a good use of the credit actually. The Cheesecake Factory, not just Cheesecake Factory. Yeah, it matters. Sometimes GrubHub can be okay, but I’ve been seeing a lot of markups on GrubHub, so I’ve just been making it easy and going to the Cheesecake Factory. And I also have some other gift cards from past deals, so I can use the $10, charge the Amex card and pay the rest with the gift card.
And you could even tip using the [00:24:00] Cheesecake Factory gift cards. Oh, that’s smart. Actually, I haven’t thought about that. I usually do GrubHub and I just angrily order half a banana with my $10 and call it a day. Oh, no Hopefully at least some Chinese food. I used my Chase Sapphire Reserve DoorDash restaurant credit.
It was $5 credit and the veggie fried rice was about 5 75, so that wasn’t too bad. And I had about 40 cents in DoorDash credits. That’s how much it was? Yeah. Yeah. Wow. That’s a good deal. That wasn’t too bad. I found that restaurants and dining are actually quite a bit cheaper in New York than in California compared to California. Yep. But here in Pennsylvania and often in New Jersey, I’m getting a lot of grocery rewards with Acme. I have a car and I’m using the gas rewards, so the cost of living in PA has been pretty good for me. Yeah, I believe it. And again, the gambling, some bonuses on the online gambling using prepaid and gift cards has been a really nice side hustle. Dave Ramsey says you shouldn’t gamble. Yes. He called FanDuel a portal [00:25:00] to hell.
That’s what he called it. Really? And he’s still promoting a cruise that you can spend about $3,000 to take a cruise with Dave and the personalities. And here in miles and points, of course, we’re taking all these comp cruises. I’m getting offers from celebrity that I’m just declining at this point.
I’m going to be cruising with Virgin Voyages. It was $150 in taxes and fees thanks to Ocean Casino, Atlantic City, status match to get the comp Virgin Cruise. I’m looking forward to that. That’s fantastic. Virgin is my favorite cruise line at this point. I’ve got no kids, so it being a child free cruise was fantastic.
Yep. That’s one benefit. I think it’s 18 because once you’re in international waters drinking, you can just do whatever you want. Very good. Anything else happening on your end in the miles and Points world? No, I think that’s it. I’d say just keep your eyes peeled for new releases.
’cause they’re coming fast and hard. More news to come from Rove. Yeah, definitely. [00:26:00] And we hope to have you on for the April Rove report. At that point, who knows what I’ll be saying. We won’t have it on April Fool’s Day because nobody will believe us. We should. I’d be like, Rove has bought, Bilt and Amazon all merging together.
People could believe that there’s a chance. And you’ve become a partner with Ramsey Solutions. Yeah, I’ve burned my credit cards. We have halfway joked about it because Ramsey’s anti credit card, So this is a way that people could save on travel. I’m chronically online and so I’m looking at Reddit and people are talking about all of these oh, transfer partners, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then obviously to me, I’m like, wow, everybody knows about Rove at this point.
Even though I thought in the, at least in the points and miles community, that everybody was aware, Nope. There’s still a ton of people who are maybe just casual users or who don’t listen to your podcast or read a bunch of the blogs.
They’ve got no idea. No idea that it exists. We’re working on continuing to promote Rove. Yeah, [00:27:00] absolutely. And how would people find Rove once again online? Go to rove miles.com. That is our website. We’ve got at join rove on Instagram. We have the Rove Insiders Facebook group and the travel deals with Rove.
Also Facebook group and subreddit r slash Rove miles. And once again, it’s going to be May 9th, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. meetup.com/philly miles and points. Some people ask, oh, where can I find the meetups? It’s always at the same url. You just have to find the events pages through there.
meetup.com/philly miles and points. We’ll see you there in the month of May. May 9th. Yeah, I can’t wait. Had to cancel one this year due to snow. How about that? Certainly it changed California to New York. Oh God, dude, the snow. I love snow ’cause I’m a Californian, so I still think it’s cool. But the amount of muddy slush that I’ve had to trump through, that’s been a learning [00:28:00] curve.
I’ll tell you. We had 80 degrees, it went down to 40 degrees with snow. Big fluctuations with the weather. Yeah, I’m hoping spring is nice. Nothing is gonna stop me from going to local grocery stores, or at least it wasn’t that severe. I think there were two severe snowstorms, and I made sure to use my grocery points to load up on the alleged essentials before the storm.
I’m just envisioning you tromping through seven foot snow to the Dunkin so you can that’s a monthly benefit, so there’s no rush on that one. I, maybe it was the end of the month and there’s a snow storm. I don’t procrastinate that long, but see we have Acme 4x on certain gift cards Saturday and Sunday, and I wouldn’t want to miss that.
Yeah, that’s fair. All right. Anything else to add? No, I think that’s it for me. Thanks for coming on once again. Yeah, thanks for having me.
