On with today’s episode recorded November 30th, 2025. Welcome back to the show, Carissa.

Carissa Rawson: Hey, thanks for having me. I’m glad to be here.

Justin Vacula: You might be at the top five of returning guests. Maybe this is appearance six or seven I think. I

Carissa Rawson: think I’m constantly bugging you. Hey, can I come back on Hurdy Gurdy?[00:02:00]

Justin Vacula: Great. A good problem to have. We’re at the end of November. It’s November 30th. We’re recording today and we’re getting ready for all kinds of promotions with Rove. So we’ll talk about that today. But first, for people. Who might not know What is Rove? Rove is

Carissa Rawson: a travel platform and a loyalty currency. So if you don’t know about Rove, it’s basically as if you took AA hotels and Rakuten and Expedia and Amex points and put ’em all in a big bag and then you smash ’em together and shook it up.

Our differentiator is, is that you earn a lot of road miles and there’s no need for a credit card. So you know, we have ways to earn them. You can earn them via. Booking hotels, you can earn them via booking flights, you can earn them via online shopping. We just do a lot better than any of the competitors.

So like I said, there’s no need for a credit card like you would need for AMX points or chase points or anything like that. You can earn road miles without high ride card. Uh, you can also earn, we say up to 25 x on hotels [00:03:00] and between one and 10 x on flights. We are transferable. So any mile that you do earn goes to one of our 13 partners.

And we’ve got some of the really common favorites like. Flying Blue Kathy Pacific, Asian Miles. And we also have some really interesting ones, exclusives like Miles and Moore, which includes Cycl, cliff, Tanza, and Swiss and Euro wings. And uh, we also Air India who has a really good sweet spot for shore haul domestic united fights, which is just 3,500 miles.

So, yeah, it’s, it’s a really interesting program. It’s been growing exponentially earned through travel and shopping, redeem at the same rate as other transferable currencies, but you earn a lot more miles

Justin Vacula: and lots of promos. Recently we were at Chicago Seminars events. We’re gonna be in Vegas soon, and we’ve had some Rove meetups and some bonus points have come out of that.

So, very active in the Points and Miles community. Lots of opportunities to earn.

Carissa Rawson: I mean, my background is in points and miles, um, as is the background of [00:04:00] our co-founders. We’re a newer company, right? So we only launched in the end of April. We all come from a Points and Miles community, so it’s a natural fit, obviously, to do promos, as supporter points and Miles.

People, as well as going to all the conferences, you know, like Zor Fest and, and everything like that. It makes sense for us. We’re also obviously like oriented towards Gen Z, but that’s my background specifically, so I have a soft spot in my heart.

Justin Vacula: It’s the Rove World Tour.

Carissa Rawson: Yes, Vegas, Chicago,

Justin Vacula: and Travel.

Tuesday is approaching again. We’re recording November 30th, travel. Tuesday is coming December 2nd. So what can we anticipate for travel Tuesday?

Carissa Rawson: So we wanted to go big. We went huge with Black Friday, which went really well. But there’s also Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday. Travel Tuesday obviously is on Tuesday.

We have booking bonuses that are coming up. So the first one is spend $500, get 5,000 bonus miles. The code for that is travel Tuesday, 500 all in caps. And then the second one is spend a thousand dollars, get 10,000 bonus Mars, and [00:05:00] that’s travel to 1000. It is applicable for first time bookings only. We try to see if we could make it work with everybody getting a booking bonus, but the, the possibility that people would cancel all, they’re not like refundable hotel stays just to apply this code.

It was like, okay, it’s not financially feasible, so maybe one day in the future we’ll able to do that. We also have an addition to the booking bonuses. We have a ton of stores, travel related stores that we are increasing on our shopping. It spans all the way from. Southwest Airlines to Airbnb, gift cards, to cruise lines like MSC Cruises, princess Cruises, meet with Avis.

Basically everything you can think of when you think of different travel stores we’re elevating on our shopping. So that’s for travel Tuesday we also have Cyber Monday, which is not as big. That’s on December 1st, which I believe is when this will be the least. Cyber Monday is fewer stores, no booking bonus, but it, they are more elevated.

And these ones I picked based off of. Popular categories rather than travel related. [00:06:00] So things like Disney gift cards are at five x, which is, if you know anything about Disney gift cards, it’s really hard to get them on sale. We’ve got IHD one rewards is at four x. We also have buying Alaska miles at two x, which is really cool because Alaska set a one up to 100% bonus when buying miles right now.

So that pair is really, really nice in the that for Cyber Monday.

Justin Vacula: All the stacking and I see on the list, there are various rental car opportunities that’s different. Can you tell us about that?

Carissa Rawson: Yeah. We wanted to make sure that we’re offering boosted rates for things that we don’t have yet on our platform.

So you, you do you see that on there? And the same thing with cruises and um, any sort of attractions and tour guide sort of things. Avis, Alamo, enterprise, all of ’em are on there because it’s a, you’re using it for a shopping portal. It will count as a direct booking. Right? So it’s like as if you had used Rakuten, the extension or anything like that to click through.

It’s not booking through ro, so it’s not gonna be a third party booking. It is just gonna be [00:07:00] clicked through ro, the shopping portal to you directly to, I don’t know, Thrifty’s website and book from there. So you’ll be able to stack your at least status benefits and earn rental power points with your row miles.

Justin Vacula: And if you use a Visa Infinite credit card, you should still get those rental protections correct.

Carissa Rawson: Yep, you do

Justin Vacula: the demise of the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Many are considering downgrading war on happiness. Many people are downgrading their visa, infinite credit cards, but if they still have them, they can possibly use those or check other credit cards.

They might have that offer the rental car protections, but it’s nice getting some bonus Rove miles, so maybe you can find some low rates and get the Rove miles in addition to the credit card rewards. Agreed. And gift cards I believe are still bonus through gift cards.com. Is that right?

Carissa Rawson: Cyber Monday, we have a bunch of them.

Disney Grub, Instacart, quince, Netflix, Starbucks. Those are all elevated up to five x travel. Tuesday [00:08:00] we have, they’re at 4.9 x. Airbnb, Delta, Southwest. But those tend to be really popular, so I pick them a lot for our updated, our, our like boosting promos. So if you don’t see one thing that you like here, let me know and we can look at it for like a Christmas promotion.

Justin Vacula: MasterCard gift cards.

Carissa Rawson: They’re at three X for this week at least.

Justin Vacula: And can you talk through how those MasterCard gift cards work? There were some listeners that had a problem, maybe they. Weren’t using the correct browser or there was an issue. How does it work to use Rove to get to gift cards.com and get those bonus points

Carissa Rawson: when you’re at rove.com or miles.com/shopping, you’ll see on there Visa gift card, MasterCard gift card, and you’ll also see gift cards.com.

There are two different tracking links and although you could just click gift cards.com and then buy a Visa MasterCard gift card through there. You’re actually gonna get a lower rate. The, the higher rate that we have, you have to click [00:09:00] specifically on those links, visa or MasterCard, and then complete your try action in the browser.

From there, it’s gonna be not on the shopping extension, it is through the portal, and it has to be those specific links.

Justin Vacula: Okay. And probably avoid using American Express cards as Yeah. They might not give rewards.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, they tend to be pretty spicy about gift card purchases.

Justin Vacula: Maybe the co-branded cards could be okay, but I think the cards with membership rewards.

I’ve heard some data points of people not getting any membership rewards on those.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, they really flag it. I mean, they, and they obviously at some point there were some people who used it in a way that wasn’t intended. So IMEX is definitely the one who’s on the lookout in a way that nobody else is for gift card purchases.

Uh, you really, really wanna be aware of that if you’re trying to meet like, um, a welcome bonus as well. Do not use gift cards for it.

Justin Vacula: On gift cards.com anyway, where it’s like a more obvious transaction. Yeah. Kristen, I, I suppose they, they got a lifetime achievement award. Oh, how much can I get through? [00:10:00] And they, they keep ordering.

Yeah. What’s, what’s really intended, like oh two 50 a day, 500 a day? Maybe 500 a day is okay. I mean, it depends.

Carissa Rawson: I mean, it’s all Amex is. Thing. You know, we don’t have a cap. If you’re doing gift cards through us, it’s $2,000 per transaction, but we don’t limit your transactions. Okay.

Justin Vacula: So hopefully some listeners will have success with that.

And using these MasterCard gift cards, these are virtual gift cards, correct? Yeah, they’re, I know one listener passed podcast Guest Decker, he was able to register the gift cards. So that should increase success when using these as some merchants will decline unregistered cards. So that’s a nice feature.

And I believe they’re also able to be added to various mobile wallets. So you can use them for in-person purchases if you desire. Yeah.

Carissa Rawson: Great data points.

Justin Vacula: Okay. Anything new coming for early 2026 with Rove?

Carissa Rawson: We’ve been looking at a few different things. Originally our app was slated to come out, hmm, maybe tomorrow, but, uh, it got pushed back a little bit.

So be, uh, [00:11:00] on a lookout. For our app in the beginning of next year. We also have a few different things that we’re debuting. We are adding new transfer partners. I always say that, but we are just waiting on integration for a couple of them. They’re really good ones. And you know, the last time I think I was talking about it, it was a really good one.

It ended up being miles and more. We do have a couple more coming out, which I’m really, really excited for people to hear about. That’ll be early 2026. We’ve got the app and I’ve already been, you know, I’ve spoken a little bit about Cardlink offers, same thing. Those were supposed to be coming out this year, but we wanted to sort of make it a cohesive launch.

So they’ll be paired like with the app and those cardlink offers are, for example, when you do dining, like row dining, same thing you pay in person, your card is linked to ro, your wallet, and it’s an automatic miles earned on, you know, eligible restaurants. And which is not like other stores have that, right?

Like there’s like the United Mileage plus dining, even built dining, whatever. What’s cool is with Cardlink offers offers is that you have the ability [00:12:00] to set and forget your shopping in person shopping. So there’s no like Rakuten wall that you do in shopping offers, you have to activate save the Capital One.

It’s pretty limited, kinda annoying for the most part. Our card linked offers are gonna be automated, so as long as you have your card linked to your wallet and these. 10,000 merchants are participating. When you go and jumping go in person, you’ll just get the miles automatically added to your account.

So that’s pretty cool.

Justin Vacula: I’m really looking forward to in-store offers that if I make purchases at Lowe’s, for example, giant, various grocery stores, at least getting one x row of miles, I’d be very happy with that.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, agreed.

Justin Vacula: All right. Maybe for 2026, and I know some Rove meetups are coming for 2026 as well.

Carissa Rawson: We have a few different things going on. So at the end of the month, we have one, actually next week we have one at Zor Fest. We are doing a a row suite and a reception in a 3000 square foot penthouse. Justin, I know you’re [00:13:00] coming, so that’ll be pretty cool if you’re going to the Zork Fest Drama Conference, that’s a, the reception will be a fantastic place to meet up.

We have one at the end of the month in New York for mostly locals. Then the weekend of February 20th, we are having a giant meetup in Orlando. We’ve already got like 35 people signed up. Uh, it is meant to be a weekend and I already know some people are like planning pre parties and post parties, so that’s pretty cool.

We are doing a brunch and then for anyone who’s interested, AKA Me, I’ve caught a drink around the world, so that’ll be really fun. I’ve never made it successfully around the world, and I don’t anticipate it in February, but I’m gonna give it my best shot.

Justin Vacula: Well, we’ll have a lot of drinks in Las Vegas for sure.

We’ll be going to vendor pump at Paris using our Chase exclusive tables benefit and a lot of drink vouchers to go with that from Caesar status. So you might not be drinking around the world, but at least throughout Paris,

Carissa Rawson: that works for me.

Justin Vacula: And what’s the date on the New York event? [00:14:00]

Carissa Rawson: It’s on December 29th.

So I, it’s pretty small, obviously it’s, it’s tough to get people out for the holidays.

Justin Vacula: A travel hacker’s dilemma strikes again. I’m going to be in Boston, but I won’t be driving in Boston as past podcast guest. Purple Princess Perry. Perry Kim from the show. Love on The Spectrum has said, EW, driving in Boston.

So I’ll be taking the MBTA around and flying into Boston from Philadelphia.

Carissa Rawson: Is there a loyalty program for that?

Justin Vacula: Ooh. Unfortunately not. But if Rove could, uh, perhaps get something going that, that’d be really interesting. If Amtrak, perhaps as well, some Amtrak Rove relationship. That’d be cool.

Carissa Rawson: I have actually tried already for Amtrak.

Justin Vacula: Ah, yeah. War unhappiness. We can’t transfer our Rove miles to, I know. Not yet.

Carissa Rawson: It’s, Ooh,

Justin Vacula: not it’s, it’s,

Carissa Rawson: it’s a government, you know, I mean, it’s government subsidized anyway, so if anyone has an email address that they’ll respond to, please let me know, because so far it’s been futile.

Justin Vacula: All right. Nicole Lopez from Social Media at Amtrak, if you’re listening, Carissa’s here for you.[00:15:00]

And that’s the Rove Insiders Facebook page. People can join for more information and the upcoming events.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, it’s RO Insiders. Um, it’s a private Facebook group, so you know, I’ll bring you if you ask to join. It’s been going pretty rapidly, which is good. We discussed some not super public information in there.

I ask people what they wanna see for transfer partners. I ask what they wanna see for promotions. It’s very, Rove is very much user led, which I think is pretty cool, and that’s where it all happens.

Justin Vacula: So you don’t need to use a credit card to earn Rove miles and participate, but you can, as we know, the answer to everything is more credit cards.

So we might not have the Dave Ramsey and Rove partnership, which is curious because his listeners can really benefit from Rove. But I don’t see that coming in 2026 either.

Carissa Rawson: I mean, that guy really knows what’s up. He really knows. He knows everything that’s going on. You know

Justin Vacula: the plan of spending a hundred thousand dollars on Discover to get a thousand bucks, that, that’s what he said we do.

Carissa Rawson: I thought, did he say that?

Justin Vacula: [00:16:00] He did say that you need to spend a hundred thousand on Discover to get a thousand dollars. That sounds like a terrible financial plan. Therefore, miles points in credit cards is a waste of your time.

Carissa Rawson: I’m actually speechless. Wow. Yeah. I mean, look, if you value cash, then do like a bank bonus.

You know what I mean? But you’re right, right? Yeah. That’s,

Justin Vacula: he’s, he’s not giving great strategy. So we’re here to help people maximize and get more of a return rather than a thousand on, a hundred thousand dollars in spending.

Carissa Rawson: Agreed.

Justin Vacula: But we have better questions and some serious listener feedback. This is Michael Traeger.

Thanks Michael for subscribing and asking your questions for the episode. Michael asks, in your opinion, what is your favorite transfer partner with Rove?

Carissa Rawson: That’s hard. Um, we have really good ones. My default is Miles and Moore because I am genuinely obsessed with the fact that there are 88 mile flights from the US to Europe, uh, in a, it’s an economy [00:17:00] and there are taxes and fees, but I have.

Never, ever, ever seen a rate that low. And so I think that that is so cool. And they also have expanded access to first class, left one as a first class, which I can tell you from experience is like worth it. Um, even though it is pricey, so probably miles and more. Other than that, flying blue is just such a solid option.

Justin Vacula: The second question, also, as she has explained, clarify the rates that one can earn. Hotel stays, loyalty points when you book hotels.

Carissa Rawson: Talking about loyalty eligible, and actually I didn’t even bring this up when I was talking about Rove. Two different ways to book hotels with Rove. The first is a rove rate, which earns up just running five bucks.

But we also have loyalty eligible, and that is the ability to book through Rove, to do a direct booking with a hotel through roe, which is like super uncommon. It can, it’s actually like unprecedented. So you book a loyalty eligible. Hotel through row to use the toggle to make sure that you’re filtering to just those properties.

And it is a flat five x row miles per dollar spent. [00:18:00] We boosted it on Black Friday up to 10 in those stack with the hotel points, elite night credits and status that you earn. So for example, if you booked a Hilton Hotel on row, you’ll get five row barrels per dollar spent. And then Hilton, the hotel, is the one who charges your credit cards.

So you’ll be able to earn. Actual bonus rate, bonus points with like a co branded credit card. For example, like the Hilton Honor, American Express Aspire card gets, I think 14 x, which will stack with your ro. And then of course it gives you diamond status, which gives you a hundred percent bonus in addition on your cash rate.

So yeah, you’ll be able to earn all of those points from Hilton in addition to your growth miles,

Justin Vacula: all the stacking. And the final question. If you book prepaid and non-refundable hotels, do you get your rove miles right away?

Carissa Rawson: So it depends whether you’re booking your R rate or loyalty eligible. Um, rove rate, you do get them.

If it’s a non-refundable prepaid stay, then it is instant. It used to be that way with loyalty eligible, but when we debut version [00:19:00] two, we had to give the power of charging over to the hotel in order to make the co-brand work right, or to trigger your credits from like amex. Because we did that, because we gave the oversight to the property, we have to wait for them to tell us whether or not you have actually stayed at the property.

Like in the same way that, for example, if you booked a, a non-refundable Marriott hotel and then didn’t show up, you’re still not gonna earn your points or get your elite net credit. If you do that on row, they’re gonna tell us even though it’s non-refundable and we won’t get the commission. So we can’t give you those Rove miles if you know how.

Um, so we do, we have to wait until the hotel confirms that you’ve completed your stay and that takes. Between four to six weeks after checkout.

Justin Vacula: Alright, and we have a new announcement for FTU Dallas. You’ll be at Frequent Traveler University in Dallas. I’ll also be speaking and I’m helping organize the event behind the scenes.

We’re close to the DFW airport. The event is May 1st through the third 2026 at the Nylo Las Colinas [00:20:00] Hotel by Hilton. Ticket sales are live, $200 for FTU members, $249 for non-members. You can also grab an FTU annual membership for online courses, seminars, member perks, event discounts, and more. So we’re looking forward to FTU Dallas.

Carissa Rawson: I really like FTUI. Uh, I love the events and I think it’s just such valuable information, so I’m happy for it.

Justin Vacula: Lots of speakers, lots of different faces compared to past events, so it should be a great experience.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, absolutely.

Justin Vacula: And you recently moved to New York. How has that been going?

Carissa Rawson: It’s cold. I haven’t been gotten from California, so it’s definitely been an adjustment.

It snowed. I mean, it didn’t stick, but it snowed and as in California and like, wow. Like I told my family and everybody freaked out, right? ’cause we go to the snow. So it’s very exciting when it snows. So that was cool. But it’s a very, very, very different vibe. Bigger than I thought, um, being than from being California.

And like, I’m, I traveled. [00:21:00] All the time. I’m, I’m like, oh, yeah, it’s different cultures. D No, it’s different. It’s different in New York. I, I love that there’s a lot to do. It’s definitely an adjustment though,

Justin Vacula: and maybe more New York events coming in 2026.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, I mean, I’ll be looking at doing at least monthly meetups throughout the year, not just in New York, but traveling around to different cities.

In the Insiders group, I did a poll to see where we should be hitting next. We did Chicago at the seminars and then Orlando as well. So, yeah, New York will be coming up, you know, monthly meetings at least. And then as I sort of travel around Texas, Georgia, wherever, wherever the people are.

Justin Vacula: Very good. And any updates on the RO promotion for the influencer?

The global adventure. Officer for the 1 million miles,

Carissa Rawson: I have finished the initial review, so we are down to 84 candidates. We had over 800, so we’re down to 84 and we are going through and about to start sending out four second rounds of interviews for those people who made it through.

Justin Vacula: All right, very [00:22:00] good.

Any timeline on when someone will be chosen?

Carissa Rawson: I would say probably January pretty difficult, obviously now with the holidays. Um, so I would say January.

Justin Vacula: All right, very good. And we’ll see you in a few days in Las Vegas for Zork Fest Ticket Sale. Still available.

Carissa Rawson: I know you’ve got a code, so wait. If you’re going to use, or if you haven’t bought a ticket yet, use Justin’s code.

And then also you wanna enter the code during the actual ticket purchasing thing. If you type in or row of miles and hit apply, it will unlock the sweet party offer, which is otherwise hidden. And then use your code Justin, at checkout for discount.

Justin Vacula: HurdyGurdy is the code. All right. Anything else you’d like to add?

Carissa Rawson: I think that’s it for me this morning.

Justin Vacula: All right. Shorter episode than usual with some updates here, but good to chat. Good to catch up and see you in a few days.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, can’t wait. Vander Pro.

Justin Vacula: Yep. $150 times eight maybe. So we’re going to have a [00:23:00] lot of

Carissa Rawson: good,

Justin Vacula: and hopefully, uh, they play ball with us. Oh, you have too many people.

We can’t split the check. Uh, all right, well, we’ll just sit at separate tables or we’ll all sit in the bar area, I suppose. So stay tuned as too, how that will work out.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, I wanna, I honestly. I wanna know if, if we got one table, if that would fit every single plate of food. If it’s a hundred. I

Justin Vacula: mean first world problem, too much food, too many dining credits help.

Yeah, there’s like these crazy normie takes about. Vegas is so expensive. Vegas is a rip off. And I’m chatting with my friend Heidi past podcast guest who will be coming and we have this $150 Chase credit. We have these $50 Hilton credits. We have all these MGM comps from MGM rewards. From spending on the MGM credit cards, the My Vegas Rewards from the phone Army, she’s going to be staying at Waldorf Astoria, so she has Hilton Dining Credits and she has the American Express Aspire Resort credits.

There’s just so much to be had, so these people just [00:24:00] really aren’t trying and so hyperfocused on, oh, a place charge $20 for a water bottle, therefore Vegas is too expensive.

Carissa Rawson: Do you think Dave Ramsey thinks that Vegas is too expensive?

Justin Vacula: It’s gambling and credit cards, so how can you possibly win? Right. No, no one could possibly be smart to win money gambling.

Who could ever do that? Oh no. Not like a Zork Fest is gonna teach you how to do that. The house does not always win when you’re using your brain and stacking various promotions just like you can with travel andro.

Carissa Rawson: Yeah, agreed.

Justin Vacula: Okay. Thanks for coming on and thanks everyone for listening. Stay tuned for future episodes.
