Brooke: Hey Justin. Thanks for having me.

Justin Vacula: Interesting to chat again. We were chatting earlier. We were both wearing purple by Total Accident. I still have my old Upper Morland Golden [00:02:00] Bears t-shirt I bought was a giant grocery rewards a few years ago.

Brooke: Excellent. Yeah, I usually wear purple to represent card pointers and it just so happened that Justin and I were on a meeting and we were both wearing purple.

But it’s so funny because now. Because I’m always wearing purple and I’m always featuring the card pointer’s purple. Every time Justin goes somewhere and sees something purple, he sends me a picture of it, which just makes me laugh and makes me so happy. So like he was in Vegas and one of the buildings was lit up purple and he was like, oh, purple for you, Brooks come like this running joke between us about who can find the most purple.

So I appreciate that about you.

Justin Vacula: Yes, and of course. Past podcast guest, purple Princess Perry Kim from the Netflix show. Love on The Spectrum. Chatted with her twice in Boston in her hometown, featuring the MBTA, her favorite train line.

Brooke: She’s gonna have to compete with me for who’s the biggest purple princess.

That’s all I have to say. You and me, Terry. Tell to toe my friend. No, she’s fantastic. If you haven’t listened to those [00:03:00] episodes, go back and listen to them. They’re just absolutely fascinating. Really interesting content.

Justin Vacula: Terrific. As she said,

Brooke: yes, that is her catchphrase.

Justin Vacula: All right, let’s get into it then.

You’ve been involved with points and miles for some time before being with card pointers. It was interesting. I was friends with you on Facebook and I was planning on going to Atlantis. I posted, I was going and you pinged me and said, Hey, some of my friends are there, and we never really anticipated being there.

At the same time, we didn’t plan it, but many people just happened to be there.

Brooke: I thought that was so awesome. So across the spectrum of Facebook, there were all these people saying that they had used, I believe it’s their Caesar’s status, but you’re gonna have to correct me on that, Justin. Yes. Their Caesar’s reward status.

Okay. So I got it right to go to Atlantis and they all happened to be there the same week. And I was like, wait a sec, I’ve got friends over here. I’ve got friends over there and next thing I know, Justin, Mr. Social, Mr. Get Together. It’s getting together with all of these different people that he’s never met before, some of which he’d met before.

I know April [00:04:00] was there and there were several other people that were there and everybody just got together and had a grand old time. So that was the first time some of my friends got to meet Justin. They got hang out and they, they really just had a great time. So it’s funny that. Here we are all living in the United States, but you got to hang out with all of these awesome travel points and Miles, people in Atlantis of all.

Justin Vacula: Yeah, it was lots of fun and hope to do it again in January of 2026. So I’ll post an announcement about that. So how did you go from being involved with Points and Miles to then joining with Card Point?

Brooke: Yeah, so I’ve been a card pointers end user for a long time, and I actually just became friends with Emmanuel, the founder.

I’ve replied to one of his emails and I said, Hey, I am really enjoying your product. At the time he’s, I guess he still is a solopreneur. I’d just recently joined the team, but I just became friends with him over the years and we just connected. And then when I left my last position to spend a little bit more time with my kids, it was just a natural fit for me to go and join his team.

So my job is just to talk about how much I [00:05:00] love card pointers, and when you think about the things that you love the most, it’s not hard to speak about them with passion and with excitement. And so that’s what I get to do. I get to talk about. Not only how much I love card pointers, but I get to talk about all the earning and all the spending and then all the amazing things, these miles and these points that we earn, get to do for us.

Like trips to Atlantis or all the amazing places that, that Justin will go this year that I’ll go and that wherever all of you are traveling to, you’ll get to go to on points and miles this year.

Justin Vacula: Excellent. And for those who don’t know, what is card pointers?

Brooke: Card players is an app and a browser extension that helps you figure out which credit card to use to get the most points, miles, or cash back possible.

We’ve got a database of over 5,000 cards from 900 plus banks, so whether you’ve got two cards or 20, how many cards do you keep? Like regularly in your rotation?

Justin Vacula: Yeah, on the rotation. That’s a tricky thing because there are some cards that I have for mainly the benefits so they don’t see the light of day.

That much outside of my [00:06:00] safe, but in the rotation, maybe about 2025.

Brooke: So if you’ve got, whether you’ve got two or you’ve got 20 or you’ve got 50, and we know there’s some of you out there, in fact in the comments, drop how many cards you have in regular rotation and we’ll see how they compare to Justin and I.

But we track all of your category bonuses and help you add those Cardlink offers from Amex and Chase and all the others, and just tell you which card to pull out. So the browser extension works on Safari Chrome, Firefox, and it’s a really powerful tool for shopping online and auto adding those offers.

So it’s like having a friend that’s really into points and miles, but in your pocket. Like I said, I was an end user for years before joining the team, and it just completely changed the way I managed my cards. Instead of feeling scattered, I suddenly had this command center for my whole wallet.

Justin Vacula: Yes, the war chest, a little bit more organized and automated.

I think that’s the big advantage that many of these offers can seem quite daunting. You log into Amex, for instance, and you’ll see 200 [00:07:00] offers and here’s. Sunglass Hut, Speedway Hut, many other places that you really wouldn’t go to, and then buried deep below might be a valuable one, like $50 off at Lowe’s, or this week I’m seeing was it something like $10 off of $50 at ShopRite.

And from my experience, I was able to activate these, or a card pointers automatically activated for me on multiple cards. So I was able to get offers multiple times.

Brooke: Exactly right. So as Justin is fond of saying America loves math. Yeah. But I am, I was at a cocktail party actually with Justin. I don’t remember.

We were in Chicago at the loyalty summit and. So funny story about Justin. So I was introducing him to a lot of people in the room, but Justin already knew most of those people in the room. So that was fun. But there was some kind of math we had to do. Justin could do it off the top of his head. Not everyone is that talented.

So if you’re not a super mathy person, even if you are card pointers is really going to make it simple and easy for you so you’re not having to remember all [00:08:00] of these different things. So whether you’re super mathy and just an American loves math. Or you’re on card, swingers is still gonna help you.

Justin Vacula: Excellent. Yes. The answer to everything is more credit cards, but of course with more credit cards, it’s all these offers and sometimes you can miss things or there are spontaneous moments. Recently I flew with. Southwest on the way back from Chicago, the flight was covered. So thanks to Tommy for that.

Giving us a shot, of course. But I paid for my check bag and it actually activated an offer that I didn’t even know was on one of my Chase cards. So I got reimbursed for a check bag, which was really cool.

Brooke: So it’s those little ways of using those offers that just getting those messages makes me so happy because it’s little ways of saving cashiers, saving cash there.

Getting extra points you didn’t even know that. Make this whole game even more fun.

Justin Vacula: Yes, the wins continue as we get those cashback statement credits, extra points and much more. And card pointers [00:09:00] is just getting better and better. There was a recent new update. What has changed in that?

Brooke: We just dropped card 0.7 on September 25th and it’s completely re redesigned for iOS 26 with that new sort of liquid glass look Apple’s doing.

And it really just made it look more mature. It’s, I love the new liquid. Do you have an Apple or do you have an Android, Justin?

Justin Vacula: Oh, I’m still on Android here with my main phone and the phone Army is almost all Android except for one Apple phone that I have just for some. Bonuses with Apple Pay and some other Apple exclusive offers.

But Android is my main game at this moment.

Brooke: So whether you have Android or Apple, I happen to have both. I don’t have a phone Army, but I don’t play the game quite as aggressively as Justin does. He’s definitely at the top of this field, but whether you have the Apple or the Android, it’s still gonna look beautiful.

But so the big headline is Apple Intelligence Integration, and so you can literally just tap, ask AI or tell Siri. Ask card pointers, anything about your cards or offers, and it answers right [00:10:00] away all on your device and super fast. So I could say, Hey Siri, what card should I use at Whole Foods? And of course, since I have my Apple tone nearby, it’s gonna tell me.

So if we hear Siri in the background, I apologize in advance for those of you that have a Siri, if it’s not totally accustomed to your voice, it might be turning on right now. I used to, we could say the word

Justin Vacula: Google or Amazon, that might cause some chaos and they all talk to one another.

Brooke: I used to work with a woman named Alexa, and I kid you not.

We’ve had to turn off. Alexa every time she was on a staff meeting. ’cause someone would say, Hey Alexa, next thing you know, everybody’s music is playing. Or they ordered same from Amazon. So as far as back to the view seven, so we’ve also added interactive widgets, better keyboard sh shortcuts for people on iPad and Mac and PA.

Keys are now the default from log security. And the timing worked out great because we wanted this to be out before the holiday shopping season hits. And that’s when people are spending more and there are tons of limited time offers floating around.

Justin Vacula: Yes, Amex often runs the shop, small offers, just more general [00:11:00] offers, and a lot of grocery stores bonusing gift cards, and even if cashiers are starting to make up rules and limit how much you can spend or get through around the holidays, then the offers are still activated nonetheless.

So you might find some more of those surprise occasions. It’s almost every year I see people there buying $25 Visa gift cards with $6 activation fees. Add the gift card, so we could do better than that. And if you legitimately have to give a gift card as a gift, they usually suggest Amazon. But if you happen to be spending more on the holidays, whether online or in person, then card pointers is definitely going to.

Show up at least occasionally and possibly give some bonuses.

Brooke: Do cashiers really make up their own rules about what kind of Oh,

Justin Vacula: all the time. All time. Oh, you can’t use a credit card with this brand, or you can’t split the transaction between both cards or, oh, it’s cash only. You, you get all this, uh, stuff from some cashiers.

And usually think so. Do you try

Brooke: to educate them or do you just move on to the next cashier?

Justin Vacula: Oh, that’s a [00:12:00] good question. Yeah. Sometimes just come back another day or I’ll say, oh, could I get a second opinion on this? If it’s a newer cashier. So it can get pretty dodgy out there for sure. It goes well most of the time, but definitely it’s

Brooke: like the in-person version of hookah.

Hang up call again, it, yes. Yes. Grocery store. The next day when you might have

Justin Vacula: come back, come again.

Brooke: That’s it. Go come. I like it. I don’t have to trademark that, Justin.

Justin Vacula: All right. So when we load the app with card pointers, what do we see on the home screen?

Brooke: You’ve got your for you section right at the top, and that’s the actionable stuff.

Things like, Hey, your annual fee is coming up, or You haven’t used this credit yet, or This offer expires tomorrow. And then below that you’ve got your main tabs. So the pointers shows you the best card for any category. So offers, and then of course we have the offers tab, but categories are things like dining or gas.

So you might not know which [00:13:00] credit card, for example, has the most multipliers on gas or on dining, and it’s gonna show you that right there. And then of course we have the offers tab. So we talked about that kind of in two different ways. So there’s of course the earning multipliers, right? We wanna make sure that we’re using the right card that has the right earning multiplier every time, because using one X on a card that might get four x.

Is real. Those are real points. And then of course we have the offers, right? And offers are bank. Offers that are either cash back or extra points and you wanna make sure you’re taking advantage of both. So right there on the main screen, you can see both the offers, of course, is where you manage all your card linked deals and, and then the cards section.

So we’ve got pointers, offers, and then cards. And cards, shows you all your cards in their, and all of their details. So everything’s designed so you’re not hunting through menus. You get what you need in five seconds and the home screen is really designed to feel like a quick status check. You’ll see the cards, your offers, and any credits that are coming up soon.

And I love it because at a glance I can see if I need to use a [00:14:00] D credit this week or book a flight with my travel credit before the month ends. And it takes what used to be sticky notes or reminders in my phone or screenshots and half remembered perks, and it just lays it all out really clearly. Did I ever tell you the story about my, my, my airline credit?

Justin Vacula: Oh, with the American Express Airline incident credit.

Brooke: Yes. So I believe it was $200. Is that right? Is it still $200?

Justin Vacula: $200? Some of them are more of like quarterly, but some of them are based on the calendar year.

Brooke: Yeah. So this one was a yearly $200. So if you’re listening to this drop in the comments how you use your $200 airline credit.

So my story is we’d gotten to the end of the year and we hadn’t used our airline credit. It was for American Airlines. I don’t know why we hadn’t used it. We just hadn’t. I don’t know if we, it was just that we hadn’t flown on American Airlines anyway, so my husband is flying, I think it was on December 30th, and I’m like, Hey, listen, I really need you to use this $200 credit.

So I’m thinking, okay, just walk up to somebody that’s checking their bags and give them a [00:15:00] Christmas present of offering to pay their bags or something else. So my husband being who my husband is, decided that he would spend that $200 credit by offering to buy every single person on the plane who wanted one.

A beer, and so

Justin Vacula: it’s the boost flight,

Brooke: but that looks a lot more than $200. But at that point, my husband didn’t care. He was handing out free beers last and right. So if you were on that flight home from Charlotte on December 30th, from Charlotte to Denver, you got a free beer courtesy of American Express Soap.

I recommend that you use your awesome book before the end of the year so you don’t end up having to buy everyone on the plane. Booze.

Justin Vacula: Then using the right card and making sure the offer is activated as well, rather than getting a $200 bill and not getting reimbursed or using the wrong card. That would be a major self-inflicted war on happiness.

Brooke: Yes, I can. That would be a significant war on happiness, especially for your spouse. If your spouse is the one managing the credit cards and suddenly you spent. Two or three or $400 on [00:16:00] beer that you never even got reimbursed for. So that’s a significant battle in the war on the happy.

Justin Vacula: Yes. Then it would be RIP Daryl as, uh, a thing I usually mention is that a writer who unfortunately died in recent years, he would make fun of grammatical errors, inconsistencies with casino marketing and so on.

So when I see signs with errors or confusing language, it’s always RIP Daryl. But your husband’s name also happens to be Daryl, which is pretty fun. It

Brooke: does. I’ve seen some of your posts about that and some of those are like the worst. How does it get so poorly worded that you don’t even know what people are saying?

If you don’t, you don’t follow Justin on Facebook. Go ahead and friend him or follow him, and you can see some of these signs. You can just search for RIP Darryl, which is not my husband, but so many points are like, wild Justin. I’m like, how did that ever make it to press with that many errors? And I have no idea what the sign is asking.

Justin Vacula: Yes, lot, lots of fun, lots of confusion. America loves confusion in casinos especially.

Brooke: Precisely.

Justin Vacula: And the browser extension. Let’s move on to that. How are people [00:17:00] installing the browser extension and what’s happening as it’s going in the background?

Brooke: Sure. So depending on where you are in your points and miles journey, most people know what an extension is.

Most of you, if you’ve listened to Justin for a while, you probably have Rakuten, or even if you’re just new to this, you might’ve used honey for example. Which is a coupon extension. So it’s something that you download from the, the Chrome Store, the App Store, and it lives right on your computer. And what the cart Pointer’s extension does is it’s gonna do two things.

One, it’s gonna automatically activate all of your bank offers. So when you go to Log into Chase, so you download the card raise extension, right? And then when you go to log into Chase, you’ll see that there are offers in there and you have to go in and manually click. Every single one, and then you have to try to remember what all of those offers are.

So it might be spend $25, get $25 back, or it might be get an extra [00:18:00] 2,500 points by purchasing coffee at Pete’s Coffee. So the first thing that extension is gonna do is it’s going to auto activate in seconds, literally. If I had my camera on, you would know if this were a vlog podcast, because I’m using my hands to describe this.

All of your offers just in seconds. Boom. All 280 offers are activated, and that’s such a powerful tool because not only does it activate those offers, but then it’s gonna sync them with the app. So now you’ve got all of your offers activated and you’ve got them all aggregated into one place, and that’s really powerful.

In addition to that, when you’re shopping online, ’cause a lot of us do shop online, it detects the merchant and it pops up this little notification showing you which card earns them, what the most points, or where you have an offer. So it’ll say something like. Your Amex gold gets Forex here or use your Venture X for two X and it’s just a kind of a fun feature because then you can search and filter and check all the offers that you have and the extension just does all that clicking for you.

It’s secure. It doesn’t need your passwords, and it’s literally just automating what you would have to do [00:19:00] manually, but way faster. So I try to tell people, even if you’re a lazy card pointers user, and I use lazy in the friendliest possible way, and all you ever use card pointers for is to auto activate those offers.

You’re winning. You’re gonna win this game because you’re gonna start activating and magically using offers. Justin gave the example of his Southwest checked bad credit. He didn’t even remember that. He’d activated it, or maybe he did. I don’t know. Justin hard pointers

Justin Vacula: activated it. There you go. And

Brooke: then it’s just money that he just gets back as a statement credit, which just really.

It’s a lot of fun and it just, it helps save a lot of money and just create more points. So that’s the gist of what the extension does. Auto activates your offers, syncs them with the app so that they’re searchable, sortable, editable, and then of course, gives you a popup if you’re shopping online with which card you should use.

Justin Vacula: Earlier in September, I was on Adidas’s website directly buying from Adidas as there was a gift card deal. I think it was something like $10 off of 50. A 20% off deal and there was a little popup at the bottom [00:20:00] that says, use your American Express Business Platinum. It was something like six x membership rewards, and typically, that’s not a bonus on Adidas website, but card pointers activated a merchant offer for Adidas that gave me bonus points for that.

So basically got another five x versus maybe I was just gonna use a card that was giving one x points, 1.5 x points. I was able to get six x. Membership rewards on that. So that was really cool. So a little win and over time these little wins are going to add up and it’s basically found money.

Brooke: Exactly right?

Yep. So if every single time you purchase, you’re making sure to use the right card and you’re making sure to use those offers that you have, then it just makes this game winnable at scale. You don’t have to remember them all, it’s gonna remember them for you. So that Zena’s example is a perfect example.

Did you, and you said you bought a gift card.

Justin Vacula: Yeah. So it even worked for that. I got the credit. All was well. That’s awesome. Yeah, some of the gift card sites can be confusing ’cause you’re not buying directly with the merchant. It’s through some sort of third party website. So it could be through something like gift [00:21:00] cards.com, buy a tab or many other merchants so it wouldn’t qualify.

But this was directly through Adidas website and I saw that little pop up at the bottom, and I promise you that I wouldn’t have looked at every Amex offer manually to see if I had anything for Adidas. I would’ve just used something like a venture card getting two x. So in this case I got six X instead of two x.

It was quite nice.

Brooke: I love those stories. Have you tried, do you have the Amex with the new Lululemon credit?

Justin Vacula: Oh, I do not have the personal platinum at the moment, but I did get the business platinum with the mirror finish. I uploaded a short about that. It looks really cool.

Brooke: Yeah. So if you are out there, I would love some data points.

If you’re listening to this and you have used your Lululemon credit, let me know if it’s working for gift cards. Some people are saying it is, some people are saying it isn’t. Some people are saying they’re trying to train the the cashiers, but like Justin said, sometimes the cashiers don’t know. So drop in the comments if you’ve been able to use your Lululemon credit for a gift card, if that’s how you’re doing it.

’cause that’s how some people are doing it. I’m really interested to know [00:22:00] like. What is gonna happen with that over the next, ’cause obviously it just rolled out. If you’re listening to this podcast later, then it will have rolled out at the end of September. But I’m really interested to know how this sort of plays out.

Justin Vacula: Yes, and that’s where the cashiers can make up rules and say something like, oh, you can’t use this for gift cards. You can’t buy a gift card with a credit card. So that could be some hassles of in-person, but maybe the online purchases would trigger it. So we’ll have to see as new benefits and we’ll have to see what all the first data points are.

Brooke: I don’t know why, but that just makes me laugh. This idea that cashiers can just make, I

Justin Vacula: don’t All the time. All the time. That’s funny. Yeah. I walked into a Dollar General today and the cashier told me something like, if you’re gonna be shopping in the store, you have to leave your backpack at the front of the store.

And I said, I’m just here for a gift card, and the gift cards are all near the register. And she insisted that I take my backpack off. I thought this was a rule for teenagers, but I guess it was for me too.

Brooke: That is wild. So did you give her your backpack? I’d be afraid to hand my Perth over to someone. I just put it next

Justin Vacula: to the [00:23:00] register.

I had my eyes on it and I’ll, well.

Brooke: My purse is at least as big as most of your backpacks. In fact, I set my purse down in the passenger seat the other day of my car and it beaked because it weighed so much. It thought it was a small child in the front seat turned off. Oh wow.

Justin Vacula: Yeah, you saw my backpack. I have the Dell backpack that I got with the Amex business, platinum Dell credits.

So that could be a thing too. And I see these emails from card pointers of reminder, this benefit expires at the end of the quarter or the end of the month. So that’s another cool feature.

Brooke: Those reminders are super helpful too, so that you don’t forget about those. And that’s actually a really nice backpack, I have to say.

I saw that Justin and I were together. We served on a board together and we were together at in Chicago, and I got to see his backpack and it was awesome. You also had, from this Dell credit, sorry, I’m getting a little distracted, but you had this awesome charger that could actually charge my laptop, which I thought was magical.

I’ve never seen a charter that just, yeah, like Super

Justin Vacula: Dell again.

Brooke: If you’re looking for ways to use your Dell credit folks, those are two really good ways, two ways. One, that backpack that Justin had, and maybe we can post about that or post a link in the [00:24:00] comments. And two, it was that awesome charger. I was like, holy crap.

Because we were in a meeting and my charger, my phone was about to, or my computer was about to die. I didn’t have anything and Justin’s like. Magically pulls this thing out of his backpack that will supercharge my laptop. I’m like, thanks, Justin.

Justin Vacula: Yes. It’s like my bag of holding here. Or I engage in some Bricka Lodge activities to remedy the solution.

Brooke: But

Justin Vacula: guess Dell. I was

Brooke: sticking with a Mary Poppins bag, but I want a cord better.

Justin Vacula: Yes, Dell solving a lot of problems in this case, although many of us have the first world problem of we don’t really know what to get from Dell with these credits. So yes, mobile chargers, backpacks. People have gotten a lot of fancy light bulbs, laptops, and much more, but hopefully you card pointers to give you a reminder and you don’t let that credit expire, that’s for sure.

Brooke: Exactly right.

Justin Vacula: All right. We’ll take a quick break for announcements. If you’re enjoying today’s episode, don’t forget Zork Fest. 2020 five’s coming up in Las Vegas, December 5th through the seventh at M Resort [00:25:00] Casino Hotel, Zor Fest, combines miles points and gambling content all in one weekend. I’ll be there speaking and connecting with podcast listeners.

Buy your ticket@zorkfest.travel zork.com. The new tower at M opens a week before Zork Fest, and we hope to get those rooms assigned. Also, comp rooms are possible, a very good offer for those coming to Zork Fest. If you have offers with MGM Caesars, or other Vegas casinos, please contact Michael Trager with Travel Zork and he can possibly help you match those offers to stay at m.

Brooke, I believe you’ll be at Zork Fest as well, right?

Brooke: I will, yeah. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and to hearing you speak again and hanging out with everybody that’s gonna be there. So definitely if you haven’t already, definitely get your ticket. Use that link that Justin mentioned. Make your reservations at the hotel and contact Michael Trigger if you need assistance with that.

Justin Vacula: Yes, and you’ll find his contact details@travelzork.com as well. And I’ll be speaking at Chicago Seminar’s Hyatt [00:26:00] Regency O’Hare, November 7th through the ninth, 2025. Use a promo code Dy Gerdy when buying a ticket to support me. How about this one? Brooke, will you be at Hyatt Regency O’Hare?

Brooke: I’ll, yes. I will also be speaking there.

You know what, Justin, by the end of this conference season, you and I are gonna be best friends. We’re basically gonna hang out like more often than you probably ever wanted. But if you haven’t met Justin in person, he’s wonderful. So come to these events, hear him speak, and then ask him about why America loves math.

He’s wonderful. I mean, he is funny and he is charismatic and he loves meeting people. So come and hang out with us, get tickets, and then even after the talk is over, come hang out with us and Oh

Justin Vacula: yes, for sure. Just look for the purple. Yes, exactly

Brooke: right.

Justin Vacula: But wait, there’s more. October 24th through the 26th, 2025 Chicago seminars at holiday in Chicago Oak Brook.

Use my co-host Darren’s favorite promo code. I must have a promo code 20 for $20 off tickets. Will you be at this third event, Brooke?

Brooke: I will. [00:27:00] And I actually just used oh three for

Justin Vacula: three.

Brooke: I just used that very code to save 20 bucks, so I’m actually pretty excited about that.

Justin Vacula: Nice card pointers. Didn’t add that one, but.

We somehow sometimes have to enter things manually.

Brooke: Yes. That was not, Justin’s super secret Ninja code was not in our card point database. However, you guys should still use it. ’cause 20 bucks is 20 bucks.

Justin Vacula: Or maybe there’s something for Eventbrite I think is where it was hosted. Maybe that could be a future card pointers.

Woo.

Brooke: That’s a actually a great suggestion. I’m gonna, I’m gonna talk to Emmanuel about that. That’s a great suggestion.

Justin Vacula: Yes. Oh come. Oh come. Emmanuel to Chicago seminars. Precisely. Of course, this episode, like many others, is supported by card pointers. Oh, that’s the discussion today. If you’d like to sign up, use my link card pointers.com/her gardy Travel for a discount on annual and lifetime plans.

We’re recording September 29th. Is there a current sale at the time of recording? Maybe, but I don’t think people will be time traveling. So October, first week of October. [00:28:00] Second week of October, what are we looking at for sales?

Brooke: Justin’s link. So because you’re a follower and because you are subscribed to this podcast and because you follow Justin and in gratitude with for Justin for featuring us, we do have a 30% discount.

So we’ll make sure that link is included in all of the show notes, but that’s how you’re going to get your discount and the most bang for your buck there. And I will say that most people choose a lifetime subscription. So look for that. Because most people just wanna pay for it once and be done right?

If you can just pay for Netflix once and be done, and then every single year you still get the big updates and we’re not going anywhere. So I, I really recommend that you choose that lifetime option just because the average card pointer user is gonna save $750 a year. So that lifetime option with Justin’s 30% discount really just, it pays for itself right away.

Justin Vacula: If you like, no lifetime language offers. With American Express, you’ll like a lifetime subscription with card partners.

Brooke: Exactly,

Justin Vacula: and for those in the future, perhaps maybe around Christmas, Thanksgiving there’ll be other discount.

Brooke: Yeah, we’ll have to [00:29:00] see. We just launched V seven, so there’s not any on the upcoming horizon, but we’ll have to see.

We’ll let you all know, and Jessica will let you know if there are any upcoming sales.

Justin Vacula: Alright, and if you’re listening in the year 2115, maybe there’ll be a discount code in the month of February

Brooke: 21, 15. It’s pretty far out Justin, but I feel like we could make something happen.

Justin Vacula: All right, excellent.

Finally, I host monthly travel and points meetups in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Our next meetups are October 19th and December 21st, 2025. If you’re local or want to make the trip, it’s a fun, casual way to talk point strategies. Meet like-minded travelers and share ideas. RSVP at meetup.com/philly. Miles and points.

This month’s meetup in September, we’re recording September 29th. We had about 15 people. It was funny, they put up three tables and there were so many people, we had to bring in extra chairs to the back ’cause we were expecting about 10, but a lot of people showed up who didn’t rsvp. Some from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Nice attendance. That’s

Brooke: a great problem [00:30:00] to have.

Justin Vacula: Yeah. Yeah. We’ll need another table. It’s like the old Taco Bell commercials. I think I need a bigger box. I think

Brooke: precisely We’re gonna need more boxes. Yes. But everyone should definitely come to those and hang out.

Justin Vacula: And for the WE fans of the Dudley Boys get the tables or the crowds sometimes share we we want tables.

Right. That’s super funny. All right, back to the discussion. So imagine you’re engaging in an appra in the month of January, you apply for multiple cards. This is new card day, the ball drops, and you’re ready to apply for more cards. It was an old episode of The Simpsons, where Ned Flanders was filling out his tax forms on January 1st, but I imagine many of the audience will be applying for new cards.

Using some of their yearly benefits early, how would they add their new cards to card pointer?

Brooke: It’s super simple. Such a great question. You just tap, add card and search for your bank and your card name, and we pull all the earning rates, benefits and [00:31:00] fees automatically from our database. So it takes maybe 30 seconds per card.

And most people get their whole wallet set up in under 10 minutes, even if they’ve got like a dozen cards and. We don’t have your card yet. You can manually add it with custom details, but with over 5,000 cards and 900 banks, the likelihood that we have your card is very high. So once it’s set up, the app pretty much runs itself.

So when I first set up my card pointers, I was amazed at how quick it was. Search the name right of your card, tap to add it, and you’re done. Setting up my whole wallet took for me less than five minutes. And the best part is once you add them. App just builds everything for you and the perks and the offers and the categories.

So it’s just really plug and play, no spreadsheet required.

Justin Vacula: Excellent. And some users might have to do a sort of archeological dig to try to find the names of all their cards, look through the cards that they have. So if they’re just starting with card pointers, they have 20, 25 cards, maybe more. How would that process look?

Brooke: Yeah, [00:32:00] it’s really simple. So just whatever cards you wanna add, you can add. So Justin was mentioning sometimes he’ll have one card that he’ll just use for a perk or a discount or for a status, for example. And then that card goes in his safe, right? So you might not wanna add that because you might not wanna be earning points on that.

So whatever cards you’re adding, simply just tap. Easy peasy. Just tap cards, search for it, put it in. Really can’t be much simpler than that. Dig your cards out that you wanna earn on and vo lump Adam ’em.

Justin Vacula: It’s just typing the name. So this is a very secure process. You’re not entering 16 digits into the app at any point, or giving up your information.

Brooke: Yeah, so that’s the thing that really sets card pointers, you know, apart from other apps with similar features, is that we never ever require your bank logins. I don’t want them. You don’t wanna give them to me. Nobody wants to have that information. I don’t know, maybe scammers want to, we’re not scammers.

I don’t want that information. But so with that, all of that, you just have to type in the type of card that you have. So Amex gold, you got it on even say five [00:33:00] 20 or whatever, meaning May 20th, not like as in the 5 24 wheel. And then it’ll just tell us the type of card and we’ll automatically populate all the benefits that come with that card without you ever having to enter any of your specific details.

You don’t have to enter. Even the last four of your cards, let alone the top 16

Justin Vacula: travelers are often traveling and sometimes even travel is interfering with other travel. The classic travel hackers dilemma, like I had my meetup recently. Oh, I can’t make it to the meetup. I’m in a different state. I’m flying that day.

For people traveling, are they able to use card pointers from state to state across the us?

Brooke: Yeah, so that’s actually a really good question Justin. So it is, we all travel just like you do. And so yeah, you can absolutely use those benefits state to state. And what’s really interesting too is. If you wanna sort, for example, let’s say you wanna sort, let’s say you’re traveling abroad and you don’t wanna pay that 3% foreign transaction fee, or sometimes it could be up to five.

You can actually sort by that. So you can sort by cards that have no foreign transaction fees [00:34:00] and that can be a real game saver. Or if you have the new Atmos card. Do, did you end up getting the new Atmos card? Is that your wallet?

Justin Vacula: Unfortunately, they declined me and I’ll have to try again at a later time.

But yeah, three x points on. Foreign transactions and no foreign transaction fee, so that might be one of the top cards to use in Poland and many other destinations overseas.

Brooke: The apps doesn’t know what they’re missing out on. That’s another war on happiness right here,

Justin Vacula: too. Too much success, too much success.

Too many inquiries, too many open accounts at this time.

Brooke: So you can always reapply. And if this might also apply to you, you might have applied for something and gotten declined, and don’t get discouraged. You can always apply again. But yeah, so you can filter by that feature. So for example, you might want to turn on foreign transaction fees because you’re, or just use your at card.

So you can filter and sort, you can use it from state to state. You can use it wherever you are to get, again, earn those points, earn those miles, earn that cash back, and avoid those transaction fees. [00:35:00]

Justin Vacula: Yes. So you can go on the world tour with card pointers and perhaps it would even show some local offers too across the US and maybe even overseas.

Brooke: Yeah, so have you, oh, you’re an Android guy. So we do have this awesome feature called Autopilot. So autopilot is for Apple, but don’t see your Android people. We have cool stuff for you too. So autopilot is basically going to, so when Justin was talking about local offers, he’s exactly right. So autopilot.

Basically is where you just tell your phone, Hey, Siri, turn on autopilot. Or if you have geofencing set up, which is just like a feature that says, when I go outside of my home, I want you to turn on X feature. And autopilot is going to automatically surface. It’s going to automatically tell you rather any offers or cards that you have with extra earning wherever you are.

So let’s say you’re at a shopping mall, for example, and you’re like. Which card should I use at Target? It’s just gonna tell you right on your Apple Watch or right on your lock screen, which card do you use? And then you go across the way to Aunt s pretzels and it’s gonna tell you which card to use there.

And then this also works with car [00:36:00] play. So if you’ve ever rented a car, you probably have used car play, even if you don’t have it in your own car. Most cars, most rental cars have it standard and it’s gonna do the same thing. So let’s say you’re driving, I don’t know, let’s say you’re in Texas. You need to pull off to get gas before you go to the airport because you don’t wanna spend $12 down or whatever ridiculous speed they charge you if you bring your rental car back empty, right?

And so it’ll tell you as you’re pulling off the highway using CarPlay, which is just a car version of this autopilot, where to go for gas, which card has the best offer, where to stop for food and all of that. So that can be a really fun way to, to gamify your road trip or to maximize the offers that are local to wherever you are.

Justin Vacula: Nice and some good gas earning credit cards. The Wyndham Earner business credit card for eight x Wyndham points the American Express Business Gold for four x membership rewards. But there might also be a scenario where a card normally gives one x but then has something for Sunoco for Shell that puts it over the other offers.

So card pointers might give you a reminder for that. [00:37:00] Exactly. What do you think might be coming in future updates for card pointers?

Brooke: That’s a really good question. So I can’t give away all of our secrets, but we’re of course, always listening to feedback. Emmanuel, he’s the founder of Card Pointers. He’s constantly shipping improvements, and we had version six last September for iOS 18.

Now, version seven just launched for iOS 26. So we’re looking for ways to make the Android experience even more future rich, of course, as Google opens up the new stuff. But we’re also exploring deeper integrations with more banks for Cardlink offers. And the goal is always to save people more time and help them earn more rewards with less efforts.

And I can’t promise this one, but we are looking in the future sometime, depending on when you’re listening to this podcast into the shopping portal integration. So that’s, that might be coming up on the horizon.

Justin Vacula: Oh, nice. That would be cool. More stacking. More winning.

Brooke: You got it.

Justin Vacula: And many listeners, I think probably would agree that the American Express Plum Card is one of the [00:38:00] worst cards with American Express.

Maybe it’s purple, maybe it’s red. Maybe card pointers would even activate offers on that. Could there be a case for the Plum Card?

Brooke: I don’t think there will ever be a case for the Plum Card. Oh. There will always be a case for card pointers, but even with card pointers, I don’t think that there is going to be a case that could be made for any reason to get the Plum card other than its color, I must say.

Justin Vacula: Ooh. I got really desperate at one point because I couldn’t get more credit cards at that time with American Express because it’s two per 90 days. I was trying to get business cards to get back in with Chase at that time, and they had a promotion where you had six months to reach a signup bonus with.

American Express rather than the three. So I used Darren’s Referral Link co-host Darren, he got membership rewards for the referral and I was able to get a $600 bonus on the Plum card, but it was very desperate. Times 30,000 spend for a $600 bonus and only [00:39:00] 1.5% cash back.

Brooke: Okay? So $600. If you can meet the minimum spend in those desk of time when you wouldn’t otherwise qualify for an amex, I think you might have found the one loophole.

That actually makes the Amex plum make sense. Yeah. Had

Justin Vacula: to have multiple things going on at the same time. Such a niche card.

Brooke: Yeah. Yeah. Not, not one at the top of our list. If you wanna know which cards Justin recommends, definitely reach out. Ask him. He’s also got a list on his website, but the plum is not one of them.

Justin Vacula: Yes. You had to have been very successful at miles of points to get to a spot and say, you know what? I should really go for the plum now because I really. Had everything else.

Brooke: Yeah. That’s where you’d have to be

Justin Vacula: a lifetime achievement award. If Plum is in there, and I canceled the card after a year, they never even gave me a retention offer, but it has an annual fee.

I think it’s like a $250 annual fee for a 1.5% cashback card, and they do advertise. You can flex the payments and wait 60 days to pay, but then you don’t get the 1.5%. [00:40:00] So there could be some businesses that want that extra time to pay and it makes sense for them. But giving up the rewards. Is pretty rough, so I didn’t use that 60 day feature.

So some fun with the plum, but maybe it’s purple. Maybe it’s red. Listeners in the comments, if you have an official color for the plum, unless the color for the plum is plum, I don’t know.

Brooke: Could be. Let us know in the comments.

Justin Vacula: Yes, it is an old South Park episode where they had diet Dr. Pepper and they were saying, is it root beer?

Is it cola? No one knows, no one can know.

Brooke: That’s an old episode. Wow. That’s making me feel old. That was a long time ago.

Justin Vacula: Yes, the agnostic beverage they called it. That was a good one.

Brooke: Shout out to South Park. You are welcome to Tom and sponsor this, this podcast, south Park. We’re talking to you.

Justin Vacula: All right?

Yes. Especially for San Diego. If they’d like to sponsor San Diego in some way with one of their classic songs that may or may not go against the YouTube sensors listeners and understand. I’m

Brooke: picking up what you’re putting now.

Justin Vacula: All right, and if people have some issues with card pointers problems, how [00:41:00] can they get help?

How can you help? What does the customer service look like for card pointers?

Brooke: Yeah, so we’ve got a help center@help.cardpointers.com with the documentation, like screenshots and FAQs. But honestly, the best way is just to email support directly support@cardpointers.com. Emmanuel responds personally often within an hour, and people are always surprised at how responsive we are.

And there’s also a pretty active community of card players, users in the points in Miles World who. Who do share tips and tricks, and we love engaging with users and hearing how we can make things even better. So if you do run into a problem or you do have a question, let us know, because what that does is that’s gonna help us to improve the app, or not us per se, but Emmanuel, to improve the app in the future so that other users don’t run into those, those same issues.

And. When I first started using the app, I had a question and I was blown away by how quickly Emmanuel responded, and that’s still true today. You can get help of course, through the app or the website, and most people get seeing the answers. And we do have detailed FAQs, like I said on that help page. But [00:42:00] support is really one of those areas where I think we really shine.

Justin Vacula: Finally, what would you say to people on the fence about signing up? Imagine a skeptical listener. Maybe I have to pay for the membership and maybe I’ll get 10 back, maybe I’ll get 15 back. Am I gonna break even on this? What might it end up being? What would you say to people on the fence?

Brooke: Sure. I totally get it right.

Another subscription, another app to manage. But here’s the thing. Most users save over $750 a year using coin card pointers, and that’s the average. If the app helps you catch just a few cardlink offers that you would’ve missed, or make sure you’re using the right card and earning three x or four x instead of one x it, it pays for itself immediately.

And honestly, I’d say just try it. Even when I only had a few cards, card wire saved me a. Hundreds of dollars in credits and offers that I would’ve missed. And now of course I save even more. Now I’m more of a power user. But those average savings of 750, $50 a year is without changing your spending. [00:43:00] It’s just by actually using the perks that you’re already paying for on those cards.

And that’s what hooked me as an end user. And it’s why I believe in it so strongly today,

Justin Vacula: and that’s why you’ve joined the team. So it’s a product you can support, a product you’re familiar with, and lots of winning in miles and points. And what might the America Loves Math moment look like? So with the discount code, if they’re getting the 30% off, using of course card pointers.com/her gardy travel, how much is usually the yearly membership and how much is the lifetime membership?

Brooke: Great question, Justin. So we’re looking at, of course, if you wanna do the math, ’cause America does love math. The lifetime, which is what I suggest, is going to be approximately $280, and then of course you’ll get a 30% discount off of that. So I really recommend that you go with that lifetime paid for at one and done.

Justin Vacula: Yes, and that’s about that the price can fluctuate, sales updates changes, but once you lock in and there’s also a discount card that you get with a lifetime membership.

Brooke: Yeah, exactly right. So you do get a hundred dollars [00:44:00] savings card as a signup bonus, so it make, just makes your card players upgrade even cheaper.

So it’s just a savings card that you can use to get 20% off here or 30% off there, or 10% off there. It’s just a fun little extra perk.

Justin Vacula: Can you tell us more about the savings card?

Brooke: Sure. So it’s basically something I have found the most value from it, from using it for excursion. So it’s basically like you go, if you were going to Expedia or Travelocity and booking there, and it’s just like that, it’ll give you the same type of discount, only usually greater for whatever it is that you’re searching for.

So it might be a 5% discount or a 10% discount. Those add up. Again, I found it to be the most valuable. I used my last travel savings card on a helicopter ride in Hawaii and I think it saved me like $75 or something like that. So that’s where you’re really gonna get a lot of your value from that travel savings card.

So just another way to offset the cost of that lifetime purchase.

Justin Vacula: Okay. Maybe it can work with cruise excursions as well, because typically if you buy directly from the cruise, they tend to be expensive. I

Brooke: dunno that that’s thought I had never saw that, but I can definitely look into it for sure. [00:45:00]

Justin Vacula: The annual membership about how much might the annual membership be?

Again, the price might fluctuate.

Brooke: Yeah, I believe that it’s $120. Hold tight. You guys get a 30% discount for being followers and listeners of the Her Gerdy podcast. So if you love this content, or even if you just want a discount and who doesn’t wanna discount card corners.com/. Justin, you say it.

Justin Vacula: Hardy Gordy travel.

No. It, yes. And of course at this time people are still listening. Surely they like the content or they really dislike it and they’re just listening anyway, so we’ll take anyone and everyone at this point. Dave Ramsey might be out there, some of his teams, some others.

Brooke: Yeah, we, Dave Ramsey.

Justin Vacula: Can’t put his cash and card pointers.

He’s definitely not gonna get any card length offers or protections that card offer. But we always

Brooke: recommend you know, that you’re responsible with your credit card and use. Right? We’re not gonna recommend debt, but. If you can switch from your debit card to your credit card, you’re winning. So there’s no

Justin Vacula: envelope system in card pointers.

You can’t put your cash into your Android or Apple phone.

Brooke: You know a lot about Dave [00:46:00] Ramsey, sir.

Justin Vacula: Yes. His fans occasionally hit and run in the comment section. It’s funny, and of course I’ve responded to many of his misconceptions about miles and points. All the myths out there. All the fake news from Dave Ramsey.

Brooke: Yeah. Fair enough. Yeah, it’s, it’s what’s this whole hobby, if you are still listening to the end, is really what’s allowed and enabled Justin and I to be able to travel like we do. And so many like us, it’s, we talk about card pointing, we talk about earning, right? But it’s once you get those miles, once you get those points, once you get that cash back, that’s really what enables you to travel in just a way that you never would have otherwise, right?

It’s gonna allow you that first class flight, or it’s gonna allow you to take your kids on a trip that you wouldn’t have been able to afford before, and that’s where really becomes magical. Of course, the earning side is magical as well. Being able to spend those points in a responsible way is just really fantastic.

Stack?

Justin Vacula: Yes. Responsible credit card use and responsibility in life in general. We had alcohol in Chicago, but we didn’t abuse the alcohol. And even though some people abuse [00:47:00] alcohol, it doesn’t mean that everyone does similar to credit cards. Just because some people might overspend on credit cards doesn’t mean that’s going to be the fate for everyone.

All right, very good. And one more thing. Do you have another user story where card pointers just caught something in time or happen to come up in a nice way?

Brooke: Oh, I love this one. This is a great question. So we had a user who had eight different cards with various Amex offers loaded, and they were planning to buy some furniture at a store, and right before they went in, they emailed me, this is how I know the story, they checked card pointers and realized they had the multiple cards with offers for that same store and all of them.

Could be stacked across different purchases. So instead of just using one card and getting one statement credit, they were able to split their purchase strategically across multiple cards and get several statement credits and save them, like I know, save them like a few hundred bucks that they would’ve completely missed if they just walked in and used whatever card was on the top of their wallet.

And those are the moments where. It really clicks for people like, oh, this thing actually pays for itself and [00:48:00] one more she’ll allow me that. I’ll never forget, a user told us that they were dining, they were dinner, and the app reminded them of their Amex dining credit that it was about to reset, right?

Because those resi credits reset after a certain period of time, and they used the card right on the spot and the credit covered most of their bill. And they emailed us afterwards saying, the app literally paid for itself tonight in dinner. And that’s the whole point of card pointers, those little wins that add up to something really big.

Justin Vacula: Nice. The classic split tender, multiple cards for the same transaction, and there the cashier didn’t make up the rules. And with those resi credits, I’ve been going to the restaurant Klia in Philadelphia in Fishtown, back to the fish again. And they allow you to use the resi cards there for food. And you can also get Klia gift cards.

So if you have Zi credit that’s expiring instead of getting a hundred dollars worth of food. Picking out or wailing out, you can just get a gift card for later. And card pointers can definitely remind you of those resi credits. Now, people with their platinums and it’s getting towards the end of the year, so use those [00:49:00] credits early rather than, oh my God, it’s December 30th.

And do you think it’s gonna pose today? And. Yes. Music early. Yes, he’s early. And if

Brooke: you’re in Pennsylvania, go to that restaurant. Try it out. Tell us how it is.

Justin Vacula: Yes, KLIA just don’t park in the lot across the street because there are signs there that say your car will be towed. And the management told me that diners have been towed as they were eating.

So they weren’t in the restaurant for more than an hour and they got towed. So there’s Streetside parking, or you could park at Rivers Casino for free. And almost certainly you’ll be okay to walk there. For about 20 minute walk to get there. Or you can use a ride share credit.

Brooke: That is a super secret ninja trick.

That’s, this is what’s happening though. I am going to P there or use my ride share credit and I’m gonna eat that with my Resy credit. No, I’ve decided what? What’s happening the next time I’m over in your area.

Justin Vacula: Alright. A Philadelphia adventure. All with re Yes. Alright. Thank you for coming on today.
